1090.0. "Emerald Mine" by CGFSV2::DREW (Steve Drew) Tue Jan 19 1988 16:29

EMERALD MINE, by Kingsoft (Germany). $25 list price.

Summary: Very Addictive, Over 100 Screens, excellent play!!!
	 	 Great Sound.

Just a quick review on a Game I haven't heard much said about,
        (except here in town).

I've tried most of the popular games for the Amiga, but I'm not
a real games person and they usually loose my attention pretty
quick, however Emerald Mine is one exception.

At first the game looks similar to BolderDash, but with a much
more professional look, nice graphics, great sound ect.. The
idea is to complete each screen in the time given picking up
all then emeralds and diamonds in the time given. At first you
only have to cope with bolders, bugs, explosives ect... As you
progess from screen to screen more objects and challenges have
        to be over come.

Each screen is so different from the next, it's a real joy just
to finish a screen to see whats in store on the next one.
I have never seem so much variety in one game before. Each screen
        is like a new game!

And heres the best thing of all:

Each time you play the game you select a name to play under,
you can store upto 10 names. Then for each player (name) it
remembers (by writing to the disk) the number of games you've
played, the level (screen) you reach so far, high scores on each ect..

This means that the next time you boot up the game you just select
your name and then continue at your highest screen. You also can
play in 2 player mode, or select different levels (but only upto
the highest level you've reached so far).

This game is selling out all over town, at the time I bought mine
(a weak ago) they had 30 copies in one store that latest for about
        2 days.

The only negative thing about this game is the fact that it does
write all over the disk. And it is so copy protected it has been
found not to boot in some older Amiga 1000's, according to the
local computer store. Although I have an old 1000's (OCT 85) and
        it worked for me.

Anyway this is the most entertaining game I've found for $25
        ($29 Canadian).

        Steve Drew.

Steve - what are you doing playing games when the entire world (at
least those that have access to usenet) is clamouring for Shell
       feature/functionality updates :-)

Sounds good. Does Marauder know how to copy it yet? I will not buy a
game that I can't make a backup of, and that goes double if the disk
    needs to be write enabled.

Is it brain damaged enough to guru if it can't write to the disk?
I tried the two player mode in the local computer store, it gurued
when both players exited the first screen (disk was write protected).

Other than that it seemed like a nice game.

An interesting copy protection scheme is being used here...

DISKCOPY will make a copy with no complaints. The copy will run
in single player mode but the time allowed for each screen seems
to be about 1/2 of the time allowed if booted from the original
disk. The 2 player mode doesn't work on the copy but does on the
    original.

This is the second game I bought recently which DISKCOPY duplicates
without complaint but the copy doesn't run. DARKCASTLE is the other
    one.

Sure would like to figure out how to make backups of both of them.

Have you tried a Marauder Verbatim copy?

Emerald Mine uses a load of memory. If you have 512K, remove all
of your extra peripherals before playing. If you have more, then
    don't worry about it.

My subscription to Amiga World has run out, but I was thumbing through
a copy at the newstand the other day and was surprised to see this
game rated #1. Is it really that good or has AW totally lost it?

1090.8I need more time and diamonds!BROKE::SOOChong SooWed Oct 26 1988 14:2213
Yes, it is pretty good, and I agree with the comments in .0.

I bought it after seeing the rating in A. W. and I have spent hours
playing it. Three evenings later, I am at level 25 and there are,
I believe, 55 more to go.

I am a little worried about the copy protection (and my disk drive!)
and the game has GURUed on me three times so far, but for $17, I
won't complain too much. I just hope that it will hang on at least
until I finished all 80 levels--expect to hear from me about that
    about three years from now.

1090.9Teamwork mode, level 4!!!WINERY::COLLUMFri Nov 04 1988 21:2112
I read the article too and decided to try the game out. GREAT GAME.
In fact I can't keep my wife off the system now (she used to play
Shanghai when I'd let her 8^). We decided to try out the teamwork
mode of the game. If there ever was a test of a relationship!!
Anyway, we seem to be stuck on level 4 in the teamwork mode. The
two players are seperated by a wall and on has to trigger a chain
explosion to let the other continue. After that, we can't seem to
find any way out. We have to be missing something obvious. Anyone
out there been here before? Any hints?

1090.10Anyone get past level 25?STAR::ROBINSONThu Sep 21 1989 19:0112
I know everyone finished this game long ago but I am still
trying. Does anyone know how to place the dynamite sticks
in level 25? I got through the maze alive and picked up
the 2 dynamite sticks. It seems clear that I need to use
them somehow to blow up a rock wall or something.
The "documentation" which is only two pages, is a poor translation
to English and is vague as can be. Or maybe I have been using
this disk so long that it is finally giving up.

     Thanks for any advice,
     Dave

re: Dynamite sticks

Just go to the place you want to drop the dynamite, hold in the button util
it drops, and run like the dickens so you don't blow up too!!

Thanks Richard. I needed to hold the button longer and I wasn't
always trying to "drop" the dynamite. I needed to have an open space below
to drop it. Off I go again. Only 75 more levels...

1090.13Stuck on Level 16DAZED::GIUFFRIDAWed Oct 04 1989 16:0317

Hi ! I'm new to Emerald Mine even though it's an ancient game.
The game is fun however even if it's a bit brain-damaged. I'm running
it on an older Amiga 1000 and it won't even boot unless I disconnect
    my additional drives, memory, etc.

Anyways, my wife and I are stuck on level 16. The one with the
eaters which change to rocks when you kill them. There's also a
bomb and a wall which can be broken at the bottom of the screen.
My question is what do you have to do to change the rocks or whatever
to emeralds in order to complete the screen. We can't figure it
out. Any help would be appreciated.

    					Thanks,
    					Joe

1090.14At least I know this one.VCSESU::MOORETom Moore MRO1-3/SL1 297-5224Wed Oct 04 1989 18:469
Spoiler below:

The bomb is to allow you to get into the room below. When the first rock falls
to the bottom wall the wall turns into a converter for a limited time. You
should get enough eaters converted in rocks and ready to drop before you let
the first one go. When you blow the hole be sure that you do not distroy the
door.
