748.0. "X-windows for Amiga?" by CIMNET::KYZIVAT (Paul Kyzivat) Sat Sep 26 1987 03:47

    I heard today that Sun's NEWS (PostScript based windows package) has
    been ported to the Amiga. That probably isn't very interesting to
    anyone reading this, but it got me wondering if someone might be
    porting X-windows. What with DECwindows just around the corner that
    might be very interesting.

    Of course there might be a few problems - like the network connection.
    Is running X-windows over a 2400 baud async line even vaguely feasible?
    Could it run over a lightweight transport protocol on a pt-to-pt line,
    saving some bandwidth and eliminating need to implement DECnet?

    Real soon now working from home using only terminal protocols will be
    distinctly less pleasant than it is now.

748.1How about just a libraryVIDEO::LEIBOWSat Sep 26 1987 07:588
    Forgetting the idea of networking, Could the Xwindows Package be
    written as a library that gets linked in with amiga code? Then,
    one could just compile an XWindows programs and run it on an Amiga.

    You wouldn't even need to run a seperate process that acts as a
    server.
