628.0. "Disk to Disk" by DICKNS::MACDONALD (WA1OMM Listening 224.28) Mon Aug 03 1987 12:02

    Anyone ever hear of a utility called Disk-to-Disk?

    I understand it allows copying of C64 sequential files to the Amiga
    using the Amiga 5 1/4" drive daisy-chained to the Amiga'a 3 1/2"
    drive.

    Anyone have experience with it? What about the 5 1/4" drive .. are
    they readily available and for how much?

    My brother has been using his C64 for generating exams for his
    students. Now that he has decided to purchase an A500, he wants
    a simple way of transferring all his files.

    I think there was a review in the most recent issue of Ahoy! As I
    remember it, Disk-to-Disk (from the same folks who brought you
    Dos-to-Dos) does a better job of reading C-64 GCR disks than it does of
    formatting/writing them.

    That's because the Commodore format changes densities twice as one
    moves from track 1 to track 35; Disk-to-Disk has trouble *writing* the
    correct densities on tracks 1-17. They were smart enough to do their
    writing on tracks 18+ first. The directory blocks are on track 18, so
    it appears that transfers of half-full diskettes should be fine.

    According to the review, Disk-to-Disk had no trouble *reading* the
    whole C-64 GCR diskette. It also offers some number of conversion
    modes (PETSCI -> ASCII, BASIC tokens -> ASCII ...)

    It looks like Disk-to-Disk is just what you're looking for.

    I suspect that the A500's puny 35 watt power supply may not allow
    chaining any more than the single external floppy. So if your brother
    wants to add Commodore's 5 1/4", he'll need an additional supply.

    Unless of course the 5 1/4" has it's own internal supply; I'm not
    sure if this is the case...

    Yes, it does have its own supply (since its basically a 1571).
