413.0. "Starglider" by SZOFNA::CBODINE (Every where you go there you are) Fri Mar 27 1987 21:18

Has anyone heard anything about Jeremy San's STAR GLIDER for the
Amiga. I read somewhere that it was to come out real soon but haven't
    heard anything since.

Could somebody give a review on it if in fact they have a copy.
What is the ST version like?

i've seen the ST version demoed, don't think the Amiga version is
    out yet.

The ST version had a digitized rock tune with actual voices singing
(out a tiny, tinny, monitor speaker :-( ). The graphics were great,
nice shading on the control console, wire frame graphics for the
rest. It has a missle you can fly just like on Artic Fox - fly
it right into the tarket. Looked like a great game.

By the way, the musical theme, which is quite catchy, was digitized
using an Amig Jez San also mentioned in conference once that the
Amiga version of Starglider would run 30-50% faster than the ST
    version.

The latest word on PLINK is that Starglider is now at the duplicators,
documentation is being printed, and shipping should commence Real
    Soon Now.

I picked up StarGlider this weekend. I didn't know that it was even
out yet. I haven't had a chance to play with it too much but below
are some of my first impressions.

    1) Good fast action. Reminds me of Star Wars with the wire frame
    3-D graphics.
    2) The Amiga specific instruction card wasn't included in the one
I bought. It did come with a "novella" (from which you have to look
up a password when booting the game) which I haven't read and an
instruction manual. I had to play with it a while to figure out
    how to fire the missile.
    3) The sound during the game could be more realistic I think. Beeps
and buzzes. Actually the sound isn't that bad, but I don't think
it is up to Amiga standards.
    4) Jez San is apparently English. The voices during the game have an English
accent. I thought that that was kind of interesting that the Amiga
could talk with an english accent.

If it turns out to be a really terrific game, I will post more info
    about it.

It seems pretty good so far, especially if you like the fast shoot
em up type of games. Lots of things to blow up.

413.5SG UpdateLEDS::ACCIARDIWed May 27 1987 12:0323
I caught an item in comp.sys.amiga yesterday regarding Starglider
    for the Amiga.

Jez San was in conference on Plink Sunday night, and was explaining
that he wanted to make SG 'radically' better on the Amiga version,
but was pressed by his publisher to release as soon as possible.

The good news is that he is saving himself for SG ][, which will
be light-years ahead of SG. Look for solid objects with hidden
    line removal.

I spoke with Jez for a while, and he told me that his office now
has seven Amiga systems, including three A500's and an A2000. They
are now going to develope Amiga versions first, then back into an
    ST version.

He reiterated that the main differences between SG on the ST and
Amiga were faster, smoother animation on the Amiga, and better sound.
I still haven't seen it yet on the Amiga, but did try it on an ST.
I wouldn't have guessed that an ST could run a graphics-intensive
game that fast; it was very impressive. My dealer has had SG for
a few weeks now, but I've been even more broke than usual lately.
If I pick it up next week, I'll post my impressions.

i wasn't too impressed initially with the Amiga version of Starglider,
i'd seen the ST version, and was comparing it to Artic Fox's solid
    objects.

Now that i've had the long weekend to try it... Great game!
It has strategy as well as arcade elements, very smooth animation and
even a story that tries to explain why everything appears as wire-frame.

Glad they didn't wait for the September version, actual sales
figures are always better that potential sales for determining what
systems to implement games on first. Starglider is better than
most of the competition's games now. Starglider II sounds like
it will be well worth the wait till September.

I've had SG for a couple of weeks now. Good game!

At level 2 (after you get past 10,000 points) the animation tends
to slow down as more things are going on. It also gets much more
    difficult.

It took me a few times playing before I figured out how to refuel
my aircraft (I had to read the novella) It also took me a while
to figure out how to blow up the walkers.

    Looking forward to SG][!!!
