153.0. "Good News!" by JOKE::ACCIARDI () Mon Nov 03 1986 15:35

There is an interesting article in the Oct. 27 edition of Info World
about CBM's marketing strategy for the Amiga. The article claims
that 150,000 Amigas have been shipped, with 200-250K units projected
for next year. Many developers have systems, but are still waiting
for signs of CBM's financial health.

The article goes on to say that Amiga is gaining acceptance in the
CAD, University, and engineering markets, where it can perform tasks
unavailable on any machine under $30,000.

There is also an article on Atari's strategy for the ST, with Atari
planning to enter the corporate business market, but analysts feel
that Atari will not make much of an inroad there, but will continue
to appeal to the small user or hacker. (They say about the same
    for Amiga).

Financilly, for the second quarter of 1986, CBM had a net profit
of $1.2 million on net sales of $210 million, their second quaterly
    profit in six quarters.

Atari had a net profit of $10 million on net sales of $62 million.

(I did not realize that CBM had that much more sales volume than
    Atari).

This is good news for Atari and CBM, both of whom were pretty much
written off as dead just a little over a year ago. I am glad that
the ST is doing well, since it gives Amiga something to look good
    against. (smile).

Did anyone notice the Amiga's (is this the plural form?) on Our
House last night (1/4/87)? Unfortunately all but one of the scenes
had the Amiga name taped over. I wonder why? Maybe they had an
    Atari or Apple sponser.

The son was using Dpaint for page formatting in one scene. Strangely
the monitor had a terrible flicker. They must have puposely had
it do this I wonder why. It didn't look like interlacing but maybe
    that was it.

Nice to see it getting some more exposure.

153.2Maybe?TARKIN::SWONGERWhat, me worry?Mon Jan 05 1987 14:588
I think the flicker on the monitor has to do with the limitations
of filming a TV picture. It may be that the frames/second of the
TV cameras combined with the scan rate of the monitor produces the
    flicker.

This is, of course, totally uninformed speculation.

One fellow on Compuserve works for NBC. He claimed that unless
a supplier pays a product endorsement fee, his product will have
the name taped over, or whatever. CBM apparently payed for the
privelege of getting the Amiga used, since they were listed in the
    closing credits.

Regarding the flicker, any NTCS signal, when filmed, will
flicker like crazy. Ever watch a TV set on a TV program? Very
bad flicker. Unless the camera is synced to the video display being
filmed, it will flicker like hell.

By the way, the Amiga was used to film almost all of the 'Amazing
Stories' episode of 12/21. The only non-Amiga graphics were the
wireframe brain, done on a Gould something-or-other. Here, CBM
did not pay an endorsement fee, so all the Amigas labeles were
taped over. Note Gould got credits at the
end, not CBM. I am told that Genlock was extensively used on Amazing
    Stories.

Also, on our house, didja notice the laser printer doing color layouts?
There's no such thing as a color laser printer!

The amazing color laser printer sounded a lot like a line
printer. I guess they didn't think anyone would hear a low
    hum :-).

re: .5 Yeah, on Vice, they usually don't show the screen. A few
weeks ago they did. The Amiga was on the preferences screen.

153.8Grisly ad...CHEF::ACCIARDIMon Jan 05 1987 22:185
Got this one off of Compuserve...the Puerto Rican government was
using Amigas with Superbase to keep track of the dead in the tragic
hotel fire. NBC news showed a table set up with several Amigas
side by side. Hell of a way to get publicity....
