442.0. "Programmer Training Program" by JUNIOR::CRRMAIL () Mon Jan 18 1988 17:24

LOOKING FOR PROGRAMMER TRAINING PROGRAM INFORMATION

THE OBJECTIVE:
I am trying to get into the Programmer Training Program (P. T. P.). I have
already completed the training selection process by receiving a qualifying
score on the Berger Aptitude Test and I have been interviewed by a member of
the P. T. P. Admissions Selection Committee.  The next P. T. P. class begins
on May 23, 1988 and I am hoping to have a seat in that class.

THE PROBLEM:
Currently, I am looking for an M. I. S. manager to sponsor my training and
to provide employment after completion of the program. I have programming
and operations experience and I am greatly interested in the P. T. P. If
anyone has been through the process of finding a sponsor and can offer me
any comments or suggestions (or simply share P. T. P. a experience) I would
appreciate it.

Thank you,
Kerstin E. Hertel

    P.T.P. is the Programmer Training Program, for more information
    you should contact Joann Barber at VRO.

    Diane, I just completed the last PTP. Congrats on passing the test.
    Finding a sponser will not be easy. I was fortunate; my present
    group agreed to sponser me. I second Debbi's comment, contact Joanne
    for some help, however, she might not be able to help alot.

    I can put you in touch with a couple of people in my class who found
    sponsers. It was typically a tough search. I'll call you tomorrow
    (thursday).

    Diane,

    I also just completed the last PTP, and Mike is right, it can be
    a very tough search to find a sponsor. It took me about 1 year to
    find a sponsor and another year of working for my sponsor as the
    group software librarian. The reason that it took so long was that
    I was not in an MIS invironment. I was a secretary and first had
    to concentrate on getting a job, any job, in an MIS group. The group
    that I am in now has sponsored about 5 PTP people.

    If I can help in any way, let me know. And GOOD LUCK. I hope it
    doesn't take you the two years that it took me!!

    P.S. It was worth the wait. I had fun and I learned quite a bit.

442.6who can be a sponsor?HACKIN::MACKINJim Mackin, VAX PROLOGMon Feb 22 1988 12:462
    Are D.I.S. manager's the only people whom can be PTP sponsors?
    What is involved in being a sponsor?
442.7sponsorsSCOPE::GOODWINMon Feb 22 1988 13:208
    Seeing as how the sponsoring manager foots the bill for the training,
    a manager is not going to sponsor someone unless they are going
    to keep them in the group at least for a year or two as a programmer.
    Any manager can sponsor someone, but usually only DIS managers need
    programmers. The sponsor also has to guarantee the PTP student a
    job when the training is complete.

442.8Don't give up...TWEED::M_NAVEDOFri Apr 29 1988 13:0119
    Kerstin,

    I too just graduated from PTP with Mike and Nancy. I passed the
    test last July and found a sponsor (or he found me) the week before
    the class started in September. I was in sales support and had
    just returned to the office after a week at DECworld. I got a call
    from VRO on Tuesday asking if I'd be interested in interviewing
    on Thursday; I had just gotten back from the interview when Personnel
    called with the offer, and I started class the following Monday!

    So, my advice to you is KEEP THE FAITH! Let everyone know you're
    looking for a sponsor, get names of contacts in MIS and send out
    your resume--but also be aware that sponsoring managers contact
    VRO directly for candidates and your resume may find its way to
    a sponsoring manager's desk!

    GOOD LUCK!

    Can anyone tell me if this program is still alive and well?
    Or maybe direct me to where I can find out more current info
    on this program?

    Thanks,

    PTP BIT THE DUST. Because of a lack of sponsors and a surplus of
    entry level programmers the program has been disbanded last July.
