2585.0. "VEEP-a-thon" by MIMS::THOMPSON_A () Mon Jul 19 1993 14:38

Rumor has it....
With the appointment of one more VP, Digital will be eligible for a
no-cost bank charter. Furthermore, the Board of Directors will accept
the charter, name BP as President and Chief Cashier, and instruct
him to reorg the corporation into a worldwide bank, thus ending all
speculation about the future direction the corporation will take. We
will then be known as Digital Equipment Banc, rendering moot any further
discussion on the proper name for our corporation.

Once reorganized, BP and the VPs will assemble in Fenway Park for a DVN
broadcast, where they will unveil the new logo. Rumor has it that the new
logo, green and white, will be:

			d i g i t a l - Member, f d i c

which, according to the law department, can be patented worldwide.

As my customer is a bank, I am already used to being the only person in a
meeting that is not a VP. Shouldn't be much longer here.

Maybe BP is putting them into one classification so that he can do a global
delete when they don't produce.

From the American Heritage Dictionary:

mute:	1) Incapable of producing speech or vocal sound
	2) Not speaking or spoken; silent

To "render an issue mute" suggests to me that it is thereafter not
permitted to voice opinions on the matter. That was certainly the
intent in the famous quote at the DCU Special Meeting (though it
didn't work). I'm sure we all have our favorite cases of someone
doing their best to render an issue mute.

	Enjoy,

I heard a great idea from an associate who shall remain unnamed, to
    wit:
Put one of those LED read-out type screens on the Mill Tower, something
to the effect of: 15:15 Thursday, 22-July-1993 126 Veeps, and have it
update all info on the minute...

Seriously, is anyone keeping count, of ALL the Veeps, those listed in
Livewire under Senior Digital Management, PLUS all the incremental
layers below them? I truly wonder how the population in this company
shakes out by gender and wage class... but then, I have been accused
of having masochistic tendencies, I still care about this company and
its great people, I (shudder) root for the Red Sox, and so on...

The heck with revenue per employee, lets talk about revenue per VEEP:-) With the
amount of VP's currently in Digital, I thought the objective was to reduce
overhead, what is the current revenue per VP and how does that match the
industry:-) Just asking as part of Digitals continuing effort to be best in class
within the industry:-)

P.S. OBTW: What is the ratio of VP to staff? (i.e. 150 VP @ 10 staff = 1,500)

2585.13133 VPs + directors?SWAMPD::ZIMMERMANNI'm a DECer, not a DECieFri Jul 23 1993 01:4911
I recently recieved a document listing all (?) management from L2 and
up. I counted 133 VP 'positions'. I say positions, because there
were several VPs in 'acting' roles, in addition to their regular role.

But, let me also note that at least one former VP, is now a 'director'.

Anyone know what the average DECer salary was before TFSO started, and
what it is now. Assuming mostly ICs got hit, the avaerage salary should
be up significantly (with 30,000+ departures).

re: .9

There seem to be 133 lines in your list but that hardly equates to 133 VPs.
A number of names are duplicated (as being on the SLT and as heading their
own empires farther down the list, plus those that wear more than two "hats").

The number is less important than is the symbolism that upper management is
still more concerned with dividing up the high-priced turf than with delivering
a clear message about how we as a company can succeed in the marketplace (or
any other message that might reassure employees about the long-term viability
of the company, for that matter).

Geoff Shingles is not MD of Digital Equipment Corp. Ltd.
He was MD & Chairman of Digital Equipment Co. Limited, he is now just Chairman.
Chris Conway is the MD of Digital Equipment Co. Limited.

How about ranked in order of usefulness?

(Hey, engineers get "laddered" into order, why not VPs?)

Digital announces new Vice President for Alpha AXP Program

[Following is the text of a message to employes from Ed Lucente, Vice
President, Sales and Marketing, and Bill Strecker, Vice President,
   Engineering.]

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Harold F. "Bud" Enright
Jr. to Vice President, Alpha AXP Program. Bud will report to both of
   us.

Bud will be responsible for developing the strategies and business
plans to support Digital's efforts in deploying the Alpha AXP
technology. In addition, he will integrate the goals and marketing
plans for AXP systems to meet Digital's overall financial and market
   objectives.

Bud's expertise in establishing and growing new markets will lead the
corporation's efforts in advancing the unique characteristics of Alpha

AXP technology in new markets, with new applications, to new
   customers.

Bud joins Digital from Evans & Sutherland in Salt Lake City, Utah,
where he was Vice President and General Manager of the Design Software
Group. Before joining Wavefront Technologies, Inc. in Santa Barbara,
California, where he was President and Chief Executive Officer and
Director, Bud led his own company that provided interim management to
organizations in the information technology, software, and health care
   fields.

Earlier in his career, Bud held a variety of executive level positions
with Prime Computer, Inc., Metpath Inc. (Teterboro, N.J.), and IBM
   Corporation.

Bud earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University
of Notre Dame and his Master of Business Administration from the
   University of Hawaii.

Please join us in welcoming Bud to Digital and supporting him in this
   key assignment.

I'd rather it be Larry "Bud" Melman. ;-)

    re: announcement verbiage

It looks like Bud has been around the block a few times, quite a few
company names in there. He has an MBA, so I guess that lets him out
from under the "Engineering controls the World" stigma. But the real
thing I want to know: This is the guy who is going to make the world
aware of Alpha; but I wasn't aware that E&S was even still around, much
    less developing software ...
