177.0. "DEC Culture article" by MASTER::JDEADERICK (Joan E. Deaderick) Wed Aug 27 1986 00:30

    Some time ago an article (or paper) which discussed DEC culture
    crossed my desk. I read it but apparently didn't save a copy.
    Does anyone know where/what it is? It may have been excerpted from
    the Engineering Guide, but I don't think so.

    Such an article appeared in the Boston Globe - possibly last spring.
177.2Where to find out about DEC's cultureNY1MM::SWEENEYPat SweeneyWed Aug 27 1986 02:2321
    DEC's culture has been written about extensively.

    By looking at the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature and the
    Business Periodicals index you can get the articles that were published
    in Business Week, Forbes, Fortune, etc. Expect anything written
    from August 1983 to December 1984 to be highly critical.

    By looking at the New York Times and Wall Street Journal you can
    get a list of articles on DEC. Ken Olsen was profiled on the front
    page of the Wall Street Journal about a month ago.

    As for books (all written around 1982) DEC is described in Corporate
    Culture, In Search of Excellence, and The 100 Best Companies to
    Work for in America.

    An excellent analysis of "what went wrong" was published in Marketing
    Warefare, a 1985 book. A 1986 book titled Innovation mentions about
    200 innovative companies without mention of DEC.

    DEC's external image has been chronicled in much detail in the current
    and previous volumes of HUMAN::MARKETING.

    There is also an article titled "The Astonishing Growth of DEC"
    which was published in the 03-May-1982 issue of Fortune, which I
    still have a copy of and would be willing to send to you if you
    want it.

177.4DEC Culture PaperGENRAL::TAVARESStay low and keep moving...Wed Aug 27 1986 14:184
    What you may have seen was a paper created by Reesa Abrams (sp?)
    and an associate on DEC Culture. This was the result of a study
    they did at various DEC facilities. You may find Reesa through
    ELF (I think she still on the West Coast).
177.5Internal StudiesLSTARK::THOMPSONNoter of the LoST ARKWed Aug 27 1986 14:248
    Reesa Abrams (under contract to DEC) has done several culture
    studies for DIGITAL INTERNAL USE. A back issue of EXCELENCE
    gives Gayle Kenyon at INFORM::KENYON as a contact to get copies.

    I beleive that one on Japan, one on IBM, and two on DEC were done.
    They are very good. I've got them here somewhere. :-)
