1421.0. "Post names of people who leave?" by ELMAGO::AHACHE () Wed Apr 03 1991 15:40

Would it be possible to post the names somewhere of the employees
who are leaving or have left after being offered/given the package.
It seems sad to me to see people disapear after working for this
company for several years without even a mention... Are we
becoming 1984 where people become unpersons and all of their records
simply vanish? I hope not, I think it would be a nice gesture.

    Any suggestions?

    Personally, I don't think it's anybody's business. I wouldn't want
my name published......what's that?? They want me in the conference
room now?...and bring my badge with me?
1421.4ELMAGO::AHACHEWed Apr 03 1991 17:1211

I understand that this isn't high school. I just think that
when you're dealing with someone either on a business level
or project level and you can no longer contact that person
there should be a way to know that they're gone. Perhaps
ELF will be updated faster, or the personnel files I'm not
sure what the delay is. We should find a way to notify
at least the people who "need" to know, I wasn't suggesting
a bulletin board just a bit of curtesy.

     RE: Last goodbyes

If you are concerned about people you work with not getting the
message your gone, why not type up a farewell letter, and distribution
     list in advance?

If your worried you won't be allowed to send the mail message as your
last official act...submit a batch procedure each day with a delay
qualifier, sending the mail message at midnight.

Just be sure to delete the entry from the que at the end of each day. ;^)

And if your worried that you wont know when someone you were dealing with
has left, then just call them. If they dont answer well..., er, never mind
thats another problem and another note. (-:

If you use a VMS system and your userid is DISUSERed the batch job
    will not run.

Hmmm...something to think about...(.5 brought up the point) What if you
*do* submit a batch job announcing your "leaving" and forget to delete
it at the end of the day? Would that be grounds for dismissal?

No, but if "they" were still trying to decide who to give
the axe to, your action might help them decide - after
all, you've already said your farewells.

There is actually a somewhat serious side to .0 Its not uncommon
for employees at Digital to have dial-in numbers to local and remote
servers, remote accounts, proxy access to remote systems (the list
goes on). While the employee's manager owns the responsibility of
the "exiting" checklist, it is highly probable that he/she does not
know all of the remote accounts/proxies/access numbers, etc.

Thus, there is a potential security threat involved when employees
leave (I imagine a threat always exists when an employee leaves
involuntarily). However, I'm not sure what can be done short of
advertising to all of Digital that someone has left. For the most part,
groups that work closely with other groups probably hear quite quickly
who's been let go. That in itself may be enough to minimize potential
    security problems.

It's common practice within the I.S. world for the account
management folks to receive a copy of the terminated
employees list from personell. This report contains the
names of terminated employees as well as employees
moving to and from disability and is designed to notify
people of such moves, if necessary.

Of course, these reports, like all reports in Digital, aren't
the most timely but they do pretty well.

Here at the Dallas ACT, one district personnel organization sends us a
termination list. Another district refuses.

An American definition of the word "curt" is to be short to the
point of being rude. When it comes to its employees leaving, I think
Digital demonstrates a lot of curt-esy. Oh, you meant courtesy --
    sorry.

Re .0: I too am concerned about the possibility of people "disappearing"
without a chance to notify everyone who should know. If someone who is being
laid off wants to notify people, he/she can easily call from home. The problem
is how do you find out if someone has been laid off if that person seems to
have "disappeared"? It would be better if we didn't have to rely on the rumor
mill, but disseminating a list of laid-off employees to everyone is not the
answer. I don't know what the answer is.

    Re .0

Several weeks ago I sent the moderators a note asking if we could
establish an "ADIOS" note and one replied back saying he didn't think
it was appropriate. I never really liked this answer and I glad this
has been brought into the open.

I work in Westfield and have been with DEC for 23 years. Over the
years I have established many friendships throughout the company. Many
of these have faded due to circumstances and time. Occasionally,
especially around my anniversary date, I think about all the guys that
started here the same time I did. DEC hired 35 folks from my class at
EI in Pittsburgh (you know who you are). I imagine everyone wonders
whatever happend to this one or that one and I feel that this forum
would be a wonderful, across the company method for saying farewell.
Here in Westfield over 400 people have either volunteered or otherwise
been terminated. Many of these folks have worked in the greater
Maynard area or have moved from here to other parts of the company.

I'm not suggesting that the company publish a list of departures, but
feel strongly that this conference is the widest read, best titled one
for those of us that want to announce our departure. It makes me mad
as hell to know that I may not have an opportunity to tell an old
friend good-bye because I didn't know they had departed. The family
feel of the old DEC seems pretty much dead. Maybe this would be a good
time to try to revive it. Maybe in the future an entirely new
conference could be established with the goal of re-establishing old
friendships and communicating to the community how your life is doing.
However, there just isn't time to do it now. The current reduction is
supposed to be completed by the 28th of June.

I vote for this conference at this time.

    Thanks,
