4352.0. "VTX IR down last 3 days.... can't do job..." by FIREBL::LEEDS (From VAXinated to Alphaholic) Mon Jan 08 1996 12:45

I know there's a big snow mess/emergency back east. However, I have an
urgent need to get several document from the IR for a customer meeting on
Tuesday.

VTX IR (node WWSMIR) has been unreachable since late friday. I tried VTX
EASYNET to find out who the system manager is for WWSMIR to call, but it is
also unreachable.

If anyone knows someone who can make sure the IR is back on line ASAP,
please call them...

Thanks

Arlan

I work in MKO, and VTX IR has been working fine for us. You should
check with your sites IM&T people to find out why you VTX IR connection
    is not working.

I also checked and am able to access VTX IR on WWSMIR. The cluster
resides here in the DAS (Andover MA) facility and although I'm not
the system manager, I support the WWSMIR apllications.

As the previous note suggests, you should check with your local GPS or
    IM&T support for assistance.

I was in the IR on bot Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, I got information from the IR.

On Sunday, I could not connect to the IR from California, however, I sent host to a
system in Merrimeck and was able to access the IR from there. I extracted the
information locally and then DECnet copied it to california. Therefore, I don't believe
that it's the IR or WWSMIR, it must be a router or gateway from certain sites. I logged
a call on Sunday and was accessing it from MKO and not from California while talking to
the support person.
4352.6network outage...FIREBL::LEEDSFrom VAXinated to AlphaholicMon Jan 08 1996 17:418
Apparently there is a major network outaage between our systems in the
Southwest and "certain" systems back east.. unfortunalty, our access to most
VTX applications (IR, ELF, etc) are affected by this.

Thanks for the replies.

See 4010.41 and try that; if you're lucky it may get you around the problem
by virtue of routing things differently. (I.E., if you can get to the
www->VTX gateway, and it can get to IR, you'll be ok.)

If your on a large system, a VTX concentrator is often used. If that
is down, you will not be able to make connections either. This happens
from time to time on our mail systems.
4352.10WELKIN::ADOERFERHi-yo Server, away!Tue Jan 09 1996 13:287
Concentrators won't work well with infobases that do download
PPT, DOC or other binary formats, or those that use SEARCHING.
There are over 150 vtx servers with DECnet, many of those
also have internet transport. There are up to 9 points of failure
allowed for any vtx connection, if one concentrator is loaded,
you may want to use another (and upgrade to servers, where possible).
