Can someone help me find our people who can follow-up on
this opportunity at BYU in Utah?  My Brother-in-law seems
to have won a significant grant.

 
Subject: compute server                                                         

I would be grateful for your opinion on the following question. Please also
feel free to forward this note to any other experts you deem appropriate.

If you were given $158,000 to purchase a compute server to serve four Indy
workstations for quantum mechanics (e.g. gaussian) and molecular
mechanics/dynamics (e.g. charmm, say 15,000 atom systems) computations,
would you buy:
1. 1 SGI Power Challenge with 4 CPU's, 256 MB RAM
2. 8 HP 735's with 64 MB RAM each
3. 26 DEC AlphaXT's, 266 MHz, 64 MB RAM each, running Windows/NT
4. Something better? For instance, I believe I heard of a 1024 CPU device
being marketed by the Japanese last year. Do you happen to known the
manufacturer/distributer?

1, 2, and 3 all provide about the same number of ps MbCO dynamics/hr/CPU
according to a table I obtained by internet last fall.
