2132.0. "DEC no sponsor PGA Seniors Classic" by STOKES::BURT () Fri Sep 25 1992 11:45

I'm suprised no one's mentioned it yet (or did I miss it?)

You asked for it, you got it: Digital will no longer sponsor the PGA
Seniors Classic beginning in '93. I didn't extract it but it was in
this morning's VNS. Someone wishing to copy it in here can do it.

    We really are hurting!

U.S. News LIVE WIRE

Digital withdrawing as title sponsor of annual Seniors golf tournament

Digital plans to withdraw as the title sponsor of the annual Digital Seniors
Golf Classic beginning with the 1993 tournament. The company has sponsored
the PGA Senior Tour event, which is held at Nashawtuc Country Club in
  Concord, Mass., since 1981.

The company decided to withdraw as title sponsor after closely examining
its business priorities. However, Digital has indicated that it will
continue to be associated with the tournament in other capacities. The
company also indicated that it will assist Nashawtuc Charities, Inc.,
organizer of the event, in acquiring a new title sponsor.

The 1993 tournament dates of Aug. 2-8 have already been established by the
Senior PGA Tour, and it is again scheduled to be nationally televised on ESPN.

I guess that means we're still going to spend money on it, but not
enough to get any payback (like name recognition) from it.

But the more important question is....

Will it still be available as an on-site training course next year???

    Note 2132.0

    "We really are hurting!"

What I find disconcerting is a statement like this, reflective of
genuine surprise at our present state, still pervades at all levels
of this company - even after two years of down-sizing, TFSO, SERP,
    and plant closings.
As has been said many times here, "We still don't get it!"

The music has stopped; it's time to pay the piper.

My comment is disconcerting, but "the music has stopped, it's time to
    pay the piper" isn't?

    Go figure...

Nothing personal, please. I was merely commenting that there still
seems to be those in our company who believe that fun and games of
this sort, in some way, is part of our "core competencies."
It seems that the new message is they are not.
I was not referring to you in particular.

2132.7so, where to go from here...STOKES::BURTMon Sep 28 1992 15:167
    No offense taken.

I agree these type of activities are not part of our core competencies,
but how do we advertise to make our name known. (topic already being
    discussed in ???, sorry I can't remember #)

Yup, and NYNEX appears to be a co-sponsor.

ESPN has been setting up for a week.

My mom went to the Classics this year (as she has done for hte past 4
years) with complimentary tickets from an affiliate of the Bank of
Boston. She was sorely disappointed in the way it was run. She said
Digital and their staff did a much better job and it was a much more
    enjoyable experience.

This from a woman who has lived in Maynard as long as Digital has been
there and has HATED having them there "tying up traffic all over town",
making it difficult to get "downtown during lunch", impossible to "get
in to gram's driveway (on Sudbury St) because of all the cars waiting
to get out of the parking lots at 5:00, and worst of all taking up all
the parking spaces outside the post office on Main St.

Finally - something good we did to please her!! (and I thought we were
    a computer company.... 8^) )
