4420.0. "THE NOTERS HALL OF FAME" by ACISS1::CORSON (Higher, and a bit more to the right) Tue Feb 13 1996 00:54

As I ponder "life after Digital" I've decided to start a topic for
    the ages.

Call it the NOTERS HALL OF FAME topic... (great idea, huh?)

Several immediate criteria come to mind.

First, you have to be "dead" (like no longer at DEC)

Second, you must be "acclaimed" by your peer noters (I think anyone
can nominate anybody, but you need a popular vote of many to get
    	in - which seems fair..)

Third, mods can vote twice, but only on Fridays (this is the
political payoff rule to insure compliance by the "masses")

Fourth, 'cause I started this topic I get first nominations, AND
get to establish the forum for explaning said nomination.

    				NOMINATIONS

Roelof Vuurboom for wit, good natured banter,
    					warmth, and an outstanding
    					articulation of both fact and
    					fiction...

Brent "TEX" Eyster	for maybe being the funniest
person who ever wrote in notes
    					with a real hand a turning a
    					phrase, and a concept...

Nasser Abbasi Sporks, backslashes, and a real
    					command of American English.
    					The "Forrest Gump" of Notes..

Feel free to add your own. I also put the following on "notice"
that if they get whacked, they could possibly wind up here too
    	so they better be nice;-)

    		Steve Lionel Mod extraordinnaire

    		Ken Moreau Thoughtful, focused, intelligent

    		Tony Bean Knowledgeable, passionate, historical

Atlant 'Cause he's one of my very favorites

Adios. Have fun with this one....

I have to add "The Greyhawk" as one of my very favorites - Sorry to see
you go. Talk about an all-star cast - digital had'm and now they don't.

    Greyhawk -

I lost my note on this subject from the other night, but it was just as
well - I was expounding about the relationship of a certain Alaskan oil
spill to the corporate cutbacks of one of my former employers.
Probably not a very good idea (might know more than I should); the bottom
line is "Murphy" will make damn sure that poorly planned cuts will take
you down a road less travelled, and even less expected (not all good
news for the folks still on board, eh?). But given the rate that heads
came off in my backyard here in Alberta last week, I know when not to
    fight City Hall ...

I wish you all the best. Quoting (or mis-quoting) the only female
Canadian Prime Minister: "... one door closes, but another one opens ..."
I expect you to find life after Digital/D*E*C will be exciting,
rewarding, but most of all - different!

As for a "Hall-of-Fame" - I get frustrated by no visual reference here.
I therefore would like to suggest that someone with the capabilities
make this an up-to-date feature by creating a corresponding WEB page
having both the person's company history and a PICTURE. WE HAVE THE
TECHNOLOGY ... How about it? Any takers??

Now for the rest of us - are corporations really "soul-less", or is it
just that as companies purge those souls that went beyond the $$$,
we are left with much less of what apparently made Digital a great
place to work. No, I am *NOT* saying Digital could have stayed at
100K+ folks, but is $$$ all that there is to corporate life?
Now that the SLT has restored profitability, how will it restore
the health of the organization? Via amputation??
(I hate to say it, but the $$$ may have been the easy part.)

At any rate, I believe we will all be just a little more diminished
when we hear the announcement "the Greyhawk has left the building ..."
(all of us out here in "N"-space, that is).

The first two should be in without a thought about it. Dick Lennard
was rather cynical but had an acerbic wit about him that made many
of my days. He wrote what many of us thought but didn't have the guts
    to write.

    Hello

DTL. I was new at Digital when I met him. Do you know "Notes" ? he
asked. "Nope" said I. "Poor little fellow. DoznotknowNotes ! Come in,
Ill show you." I saw, I loved, I was hooked. Thanx DTL.

Winalski on Wines. Impressive knowledge. Always good inputs.

Greyhawk on Digital. Real DEC spirit.

    Thanks to all of them.

In any case, I'll second the vote for he and the Greyhawk.

Steve,

Ok, I did not carefully read .0.

I also misinterpreted your use of the use of the
"on the notice list" as the more general pre-layoff practice
of notifying people a week of so in advance that they are "at risk".

It didn't make much sense to me, but I guess I'm a bit jumpy
with the Greyhawk saying his goodbyes. That doesn't make much sense
either.

Color me monemtarily confused,
Glad to see you are still with us (for the moment).
Rick

I think that we should add Dave Barry to the Hall-of-Fame. He helped
many of us discover a new breed of humor during the early-to-mid
eighties. WE also killed a few trees printing off his jokes to pass
around to the LARGE Digital office crowd.

    Who could forget Nasser??

4420.35IMHOZPOVC::GEOFFREYThu Feb 15 1996 06:4717
Yes, who could forget Nasser? He was capable of seeing the positive,
and being positive about Digital under almost any condition.

Greyhawk captured the Customer/Field/Corporate interaction issues
with a sharp and insightful point of view. I personally think he's
done more to highlight these issues than any other noter.

And finally, DTL and Simon Szeto embodied the dear departed kinder,
gentler DEC, who proved that you can develop not only a good working
relationship over the net, but also friendship and cameraderie as well.

There are many others as well, all of whom brought personality to
cold and lifeless VT100/220/VAXstation/PC screens across the world.
We can best pay tribute to them by emulating them, and keeping this
and other notefiles alive, informative, and entertaining.

Nasser was on Greyhawk's original list in .0.

I was very surprised to find myself on the list (albeit just barely
at 55 notes), so I did a DIRECTORY/ALL/AUTHOR=LAURENT and found that
my count included entries from:

	KOAL::LAURENT
	TAMDNO::LAURENT
	TAMRC::LAURENT
	NEWVAX::LAURENT

I wonder why the two varieties of AINSLEYs were counted differently?

The earliest of my 55 was in August 1989, so that only works out to
about a note every 1.4 months. Hardly hall of fame material. :-)

I don't know that they counted differently. I just saw that the node
name reported for me was an old node that hasn't been used on a regular
basis for several years. If they were combined, I'm surprised someone

I have a program like the one used here ... possibly the same one.

There is an option to summarize on node::name or just ::name, but
when you ignore the node:: you tend to lump totals together when
2+ people have the same ::name.

So you compromise by specifying node::name and letting anyone who
cares go through the list and combine what they know to be the
    	same.

I thought that was "after a particularly long squat." I think that's
funnier, anyway (and appropriate for this conference).

Ah yes, Eric Postpischil (that may be spelled wrong), a.k.a. EDP!
If nothing else, he belongs in the noters Hall of Fame for all the
uproar he's fomented over the years. :-) Although Eric often makes
very good points, he isn't particularly known for diplomacy or tact.

Betty Hurst asks what "Always mount a scratch monkey." means. Here is one
version of the story:

[Ed: From the RSTS32::WAR_STORY Notes Conference, note 47.3. MC]

This is the way I first heard the Scratch Monkey Story eight years ago. The
guy who told it was Bud DeFore. He used to be the intercept man for K.O. calls
(when an irate customer called, the switchboard would do a Trap to DeFore).
Seems one day Bud was sitting at his desk when the phone rang.

Bud:	Hello. Voice:	YOU KILLED MABEL!!
B: Excuse me? V:	YOU KILLED MABEL!!

This went on for a couple of minutes and Bud was getting nowhere, so he decided
to alter his approach to the customer.

B: HOW DID I KILL MABEL?	V:	YOU PM'ED MY MACHINE!!

Well to avoid making a long story even longer, I will abbreviate what had
happened. The customer was a Biologist at a University in Florida and he had a
PDP12 that controlled gas mixtures that Mabel (the monkey) breathed. Now Mabel
was not your ordinary monkey. The University had spent years teaching Mabel to
swim and they were studying the effects that different gas mixtures had on her
physiology. It turns out that the Field Service Branch had just gotten a new
Calibrated Power Supply (used to calibrate Analog equipment) and at their first
opportunity, decided to calibrate the D/A converters in the PDP12. This
changed some of the gas mixtures and poor Mabel was asphyxiated. Well Bud then
called the Branch Manager of the Field Service branch:

    Manager:	Hello
B: This is Bud DeFore, I heard you did a PM at the University
    		of Blah-de-blah.
M: Yes, we really performed a complete PM. What can I do for You?
    B: Can You Swim?

    Larry

The moral is, of course, that you should always mount a scratch monkey. (For
readers less involved with computers, you should always mount a scratch disk
before starting work that may corrupt a disk with valuable information on it.)

I'm still an unabashed Abassi fan (the DEC-turkey string ranked right
    up there with sporks) ;-)

\nasser started that string, but some of the folks who added replies
could also give Dave Barry a run for his money.

Now the Greyhawk, Tex Eyester; no doubt about it, Dick Lennard was
