1690.0. "WANTED: DEC Customers in the Map-Making Business" by RDVAX::KALIKOW (Oxymoron du jour:'Reagan's Memoirs') Mon Dec 09 1991 23:57

A collaborative effort between Researchers at Harvard University and
DEC's Cambridge Research Laboratory (CRL) has led to the development of
new algorithms for placing text labels on maps and diagrams. If you
know of any Digital customers who are in the map-making business and
who might be interested in new developments in automated cartography,
please send me EMail. I'll be very happy to "vet" any expressions of
interest from the Field and to pass them on to the CRL Researcher.

Please, no phone calls... and (-: hate to say this :-) no notes from
Sales folks looking to close a short-term deal with this technology...
We're looking for accounts where map- and diagram-making is a major,
    improveable activity.

    Thanks!

Dan Kalikow (RDVAX::KALIKOW), Engineering Interface Program Consultant

I also have an ESGNFO::MAPPING entry in my notebook, but it has been
    unreachable for a while.

Also, being in Cambridge, I presume they are talking to the people at
the MIT Media LAB, about some of their position sensing etc related
technologies, and the relationship that they may have.

I think it's quite a distance from Cambridge in the U.K. to the Cambridge
(Massachusetts) where MIT is located :-)

The Los Angeles Times uses a bunch of our equipment to do GIS.

They might actually be very interested too.

Try talking to Don Sturt, Digital account rep for Times Mirror (last
I checked anyway).

There are two third party companies I can think of that provide GIS
systems on DEC systems -- Intergraph and Synercom. You might want to
check with them. I don't know where Intergraph is located, but
    Synercom is in Houston.

Re 1690.8 - No I am glad to say they are NOT the same place. I live in
the oldest here in the UK. It's name derives from the river Cam which
flows through the city, thus some unnamed bureaucrat decided to build a
bridge over the Cam - CAMBRIDGE.

Amongst the many companies the one that comes to mind is LASERSCAN.

Intergraph is no longer on DEC gear. There are a number of 3rd partys
runing automated mappin solutions on our platforms. We have several
people who specialize in this area. Call Don Kolberg @Alf or Dave
Donelan @MRO if you have need of their expertise. Don might even come
    to work for you...

There was a company that I interviewed with about 5 or 6 years ago called
Bowne Engineering in long Island NY, they were heavily into map making
for road resurfacing, Gas line tracking etc. etc. I believe they are
still in business, howver, I'm not sure if this is what you wanted!

Dan,

Joseph E. Sewall Co. in Old Town, Maine (home of the Old Town canoe) is also
quite big in the New England/Northeast region in terms of surveying and
map-making. A friend here at work, whose brother works there, says he believes
they used to utilize DEC equipment, but may have switched. May be a way back
in (to DEC equipment) with these new developments...
