1097.0. "Digital Course Completion Certificates" by MSAM00::DOUGLASBURKE (Year of the Metal Horse) Tue May 01 1990 07:23

    Are there guidelines or policies anywhere in the company on who can
    give out Digital Course Completion Certificates, and under what
    circumstances they can be given out?

    I ask because I have a person teaching a very formal course of
    instruction on a 3rd party product for my project team. When I went to
    obtain the Course Completion Certificates from Educational Services,
    the reply was:

    "...the certificate is only meant for Digital Educational Services
    Training..."

    Would someone please point to where this is written in concrete? If
    not, can someone tell me what the ordering information is I need for
    obtaining these forms.

    Thanks,

    Doug

1097.1Ed Services didn't teach the course, did they?FSDB00::AINSLEYLess than 150 kts. is TOO slow!Tue May 01 1990 12:349
    re: .0

    It makes sense. The certificate says Ed Svcs on it and they didn't
    teach the course.

    On a larger scale, who cares about a silly certificate? I trash all
    mine. All it means is that you stayed awake for >50% of the course.

1097.3Mine Don't say Ed ServicesSAHQ::STARIETue May 01 1990 13:175
    I just looked at the ones I got in ASO. None of them say ED Services.

    I would call Paula Mansfield in ASO and ask her where they get them....

    Re: .1

    Ed, are you sure it's a whole 50%?  *;'}

    Actually, some people really covet the certificates. It tends to be a
    matter of perception on the recipient's part, or personal choice. I
    believe it is important to at least like to give the choice...

    Re: .1 thru .3

    I have actually never seen any certificates that have originally had
    Edu Services printed on them either. I think that that was done
    intentionally because they ARE supposed to be used by groups other than
    Edu Services, not just them.

    Thanks Dick, I'll rush a mail message right off to her!

    re: .4

    I guess I stand corrected. I thought they had Ed Services on them.
    Who is this guy, Ed Services, anyway? :-)

    I guess I put zero worth on them because they don't mean anything other
    than you were there for most of the course. I even got one for a
    course that I missed 1.5 days due to my wife having unexpected surgery.

1097.7Check w/PurchasingFDCV07::LEBLANCRuth E. LeBlancWed May 02 1990 17:048

    I'd check with my purchasing department. Most probably, they're
    printed by an external vendor. Purchasing would know which vendors are
    contracted with us so you can get the DEC logo, DEC discount, etc.
    Each geography would probably use different vendors, but your
    Purchasing people should know the answer for your site.

    	Your right, I always keep mine. I've been saving them for 17 years
    and one day I'm going to wallpaper a room with them. I think it will
    be the room I go into every morning and meditate. Yup, I figure it will
    be worth a million bucks.

    P.S. Many years later, it also may appear in a museum. How about that
         PDP8E or DF32 training certificate.

    Re .0

    I believe what you are looking for is the Certificate of Completion
    form, EN01114-09. Suggest you check the Literature Ordering System
    on VTX (Keyword LOS) and call Forms Administration (DTN 234-4265) if
    you have any questions. It's been a few years since I needed some -
    they come 1300 to a box and I didn't need that many - so some kind
    soul in Northboro sent me a partial box...unfortunately most of those
    kind souls are probably gone now:^(

    Ed Services probably has their own certificates custom printed - the
    ones from Northboro however are generic with the following preprinted:

                               Digital Logo
                           DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION

                           PRESENTS THIS CERTIFICATE TO

                 for successfully completing a course of instruction in

                 This        day of                           19

                 Signature Line                             KO Signature &
                                                            Corporate Seal

    Hope this helps...

1097.10Why they issue 'em (I think . . . )16BITS::DELBALSOI (spade) my (dog face)Fri May 04 1990 23:3714
I seem to recall taking a non-DEC course a few years ago where the instructor
gave out course completion certificates at the end. He mumbled something about
"Take these in case you need to give them to your personnel organization in
order to document your taking this course". Based (solely) on that, I assumed
that some companies use the things for tax purposes or the like ("Yes Mr. G-man
we did send x people to courses that we paid for as a business expense - see,
here are the completion certificates with the attendees' names.") My next
assumption is that DEC needs to give 'em to customers who buy courses from
us, so they just give 'em to all attendees.

Then again, I could be wrong.

1097.11what?? no week off??BTOVT::CACCIA_Sthe REAL steveWed May 09 1990 12:3015
    RE: A FEW BACK

    You mean you actually stayed awake 50% of the time you were in class??
    O BOY!! guess what -- There are now courses that you not only have to
    be registered in, but must also participate (gasp) AND (shades of
    treason) pass a final exam before you get a certificate. No longer is
    a trip to BUO or BTO or any other training center a guaranteed vacation.

    Have a nice day.

    there is a common misunderstanding when enrolling for courses. you
    see....the letter "T" is real close to "V" in the alphabet....and folks
    sometimes mix up "training" and "vacation"...

1097.14LESLIE::LESLIEAndy Leslie, CS Systems EngineeringFri May 11 1990 03:184
    The vast majority of folks on training courses do not regard them as
    'vacation' - and neither do their managers.

    The change of pace is sometimes welcome, however.

    Andy,

    You missed my ;-)...but yes, most folks are glad to get the training
    they need, especially since they probably have been doing their jobs
    without the information and or skills needed for awhile before they got
    the permission to take a class.
