4835.0. "Customer support via Newsgroups ?" by STKHLM::NORDSTROM (A Swedish Viking) Tue Sep 10 1996 10:41

    Hi !

I got a question from a customer the other day, he asked if we do some
"best effort" answering in some newsgroups on the internet and in that
    case which newsgroups that is.

He is an ex. Deccie so I guess he misses Notes :-) and would like some
substite for it. His question is interesting though, do we try to give
our customers some "best effort" support via newsgroups ? And if we do,
do You know some names on those newsgroups ?

All info much appreciated, regards, Richard

Richard, go to the newsgroups that concern Digital. You'll find Digital
people there. And a lot of them are people you won't find here.

4835.6I'll try it and like it :-)STKHLM::NORDSTROMA Swedish VikingTue Sep 10 1996 14:238
    .-1 Hi Pete !

I am trying it at the moment. I'm totally new to Usenet and Newsgroups
so I asked the question to get a head start. I'll try it but I would
still be glad if You could post some pointers on Newsgroups where we
help customers out. That info could be of good use for many of us.

Thank you all for your responses, regards Richard

Can you access these newsgroups through something like NetScape, or
must you use a proper application?

Netscape has a news reader built in.

Go to AltaVista select Search Usenet where you normally see
"the Web" and then enter your query and AltaVista will give
you everything related from ALL newgroups.

Yes of course you can read these newsgroups with Netscape. The setup
to do so though is not obvious. Out-of-the-box Netscape is setup to
go to a newserver called "news" which may or may not translate to a
real server address on your subnet. So first thing to do is go into
the Netscape Option/settings and point your browser at a regular newsfeed
    server (e.g. usenet.pa.dec.com)

Then you're all set. The only other trick you need to know is how to
open a given newsgroup. The easiest way to do this with Netscape is
just type a newsgroup URL right into the browser URL box. e.g. type in
    the URL ;

    		news:comp.sys.dec.micro

and voila! - you have the DEC micros newsgroup open in a new browser
    window.

I actively support Digital's Fortran products in comp.lang.fortran,
    comp.os.vms, comp.unix.osf.osf1, comp.unix.ultrix and other groups. I
also help out where I can in the OS-related groups.

There are quite a few Digital products which have engineers following
the newsgroups and offering assistance where appropriate.
