1813.0. "Trackballs for Digital products?" by RUTILE::WYNFORD (Dorn a Loon) Thu Mar 19 1992 12:21

Does digital or any third party make trackballs for digital workstations?

I have one on my Mac at home and it would be nice, as well as ergonomically
better, to have one at work as well.

Well, you could always turn your mouse upside down, and, - voila!

Check with your favorite airline before using a trackball with your
    laptop while airborne.

They make a track ball called MOUSE-TRAK (model M5 for DEC), that i,ve
been using for about 3-4 years now with my VAXStation II. It's a three
button affair with a little pad to rest your wrist on. Also has a special
button to temporarily speed up the cursor movement. All in all pretty nice,
and less than $200 (US) if I remember correctly.

Thanks. My first reaction is "<GAG!> 200 smackers for something I can get for
60 in the Mac world..?!?!" Then I thought, wonder how much it'll be over here
in Yerp....

I'm in the wrong business.

1813.5Still $200 for ITAC unitMARX::BARFIELDThu Mar 19 1992 19:335

The price is correct. I just today received an unsolicited ITAK
advertisement for the Mouse-Trak. Since the phone order number
was 800-533-4822, I called about the DEC unit #M5XDEC. $199

Why ? Don't they like passengers playing with their ... laptops ?

American and (I believe) United only allow the use of laptops with
integrated trackballs (eg, Apple PowerBook). The DECpc 320P notebook
features a Logitech "Trackman" trackball that is attached to the side of
the keyboard. The source of the problem for this and other detached
trackballs is radio interference from the cable connecting from the
    notebook to the trackball.

I talked to an AA pilot about this. He hadn't heard of the rule
but believes that if it exists that it's an FAA rule not an airline
rule. People wanting to use computers on an airplane should probably
	check with the airline first.

Better check compatibility closely. The ITAK trackball works nicely
with VAXstations, RISC DECstations, and not PC DECstations (for obvious
reasons) and especially not the Personal DECstation 5000-20/25, which
are the first systems to use the access.BUS or serial.BUS, whatever we
    call that daisy-chain scheme..
