I am the administrator of a 130-user local area network that currently
supports MAC clients exclusively. We are in the process of migrating these
clients to Windows. What is your policy in transfering the Teamlinks licenses
over platforms? Can we trade the licenses that we have purchased for the
Windows version?

I appreciate you prompt response to this question, as I am really under the
gun to get a budget approved.

There is no process for transfering a license from the TeamLinks MAC to
the TeamLinks Windows client. I suggest that when the customer orders
an upgrade, that s/he specify the windows upgrade UPI rather than the
MAC upgrade UPI. The price is the same.

I've responded to the basenoter offline, and hope that it will get
relayed to the customer. Actually, only part of .2 is correct; there is
no policy to allow trade from one _product_ to another. [Teamlinks/Mac
and Teamlinks/Windows are licensed as separate and distinct products.]

It is not correct to buy the upgrade for one product to upgrade the
other. The upgrade corresponds to the respective product, and the terms
and conditions of the agreement stipulate such.

In this case, the customer will need to buy new licenses for the
    Teamlinks/Windows clients.
    regards
    Lynn

3929.4Am I Missing Something Here...?HLDE01::VUURBOOM_RRoelof Vuurboom @ APD, DTN 829 4066Thu Jun 22 1995 08:3230
Well, Lynn, being the base noter I have'nt seen a response.
More importantly though I (having nothing to do with TeamLinks)
shouldn't be seeing a response and that brings me to a problem that
    bears wider discussion.

One of my goals when I boarded the LinkWorks boat was to make us
more accessible to our customers so I instituted a Digital
    corporate account for LinkWorks (linkworks@digital.com).
This has turned out to be very popular and is used by people
both inside and outside Digital. It is in fact so popular
that I get every ^%$^& thing that rhymes with LinkWorks too:
TeamLinks, MailWorks, AccessWorks. Then _I_ have to go
out and try and figure who to send it too and sometimes end up
dropping it into this notes conferences.

Now wouldn't i love to be able to just zip it off to
    teamlinks@digital.com or mailworks@digital.com or
accessworks@digital.com. So my question to the Product Managers
of these (and other products) is: if we can have and maintain
a corporate email address for LinkWorks then why can't you do the
same for your respective products? Just send a mail to Russ Jones
rjones@pa.dec.com and ask for one! Its that simple.

In fact, we even go a step further and have assigned specific
contact points for various product management issues and published
the contacts on our internal web server (http://www.apd.dec.com/lnx_int)
All you need is to point and click to send a mail to the relevant
    person.

    Signed, Disgruntled

I hope I'm posting this to the right place!

I am technical manager of a large project here in the UK. Amongst
our many requirements, we have to provide our client an email system.
Our configuration comprises SCO ODT workstations and DEC
UNIX alpha servers. I was wondering whether MAILworks for UNIX
might be a solution? Users have to be able to access their mail
from any workstationn (they have a single SCO account and log on
through our application to a UNIX account on the alpha servers).

Any help would be gratefully received.

Giordano Salvi

Even if products had their own corporate Internet addresses (which is a good
idea, and I've sent it on to the TeamLinks folks), that may not keep messages
from going go the WRONG account for whatever reason (similarity in product name,
etc.). If that happens, why not just forward the message to the appropriate
product manager or post it in the appropriate product notes file? Those folks
may or may not follow THIS notes file...

As it happens, Nina, I haven't yet got Digitals latest version of
Appropriate Product Managers for Wayward Email Requests so I'm a
little low on my supply of Appropriate Product Managers.

The notes conference approach does offer more possibilities however
but lets see (actual experience) what it entails:
    1. Ahhh, this is a Product XXX request.
    2. Off to Easynet conference, read the intro which promises to
shoot you if you don' follow all instructions exactly.
    3. Do a dir/tit=XXX, go get a cup of coffee
    4. Come back and add entry YYYYY::XXXX to your notes file
    5. Open notes file
    6. Check out the first 10 notes or so for a pointer to where you
might put the message. No pointer.
    7. Add a new note and ask for a reaction.
    8. Check back the next day. No reaction.
    9. Check back the day after. Still no reaction.
    10. Check back the day after the day after. Still no reaction.
        Add reply asking PLEASE react.
    11. Check back the day after the day after the day after. Still no
    	reaction.
    12. Put wayward message in this notes conference. 3 reactions within
        4 hours.

Now if there _is_ a corporate email account...

3929.9On Setting Up an InfoCenterHLDE01::VUURBOOM_RRoelof Vuurboom @ APD, DTN 829 4066Fri Jun 23 1995 08:0919
I've had a couple of questions about how one goes about setting up
external Web pages i.e. an InfoCenter for your product. As it so happens
a couple of months back I wrote an Unofficial Guide entitled:

Roelof's Somewhat Irreverant Guide to InfoCentering

which was written in my..ehhh...somewhat distinctive writing style
which you all have come to know (and love :^). There may be an Official
Guide but I am not aware of it yet.

This literary masterpiece has been captured for future generations
    in LJSRV2::INTERNET_TOOLS Note 1934

One word of warning though since my LinkWorks InfoCenter was launched
both it and the Corporate Guidelines have evolved and not necessarily
in the same direction! For the necessary fine print in this area
contact Mick Schonhut @ MRO and/or Don Skarzenski @ AKO

TeamLinks, LinkWorks, PathWorks... (your capitalization may vary)...
Speaking as an ex-experimental psychologist, these names are, shall we
say, rather close in semantic-differential space (well MINE at least)?

I.e., their "mental pigeonholes" are right on top of one another.
Hence the high potential for "sorting errors" when a busy person tries
to direct too many messages to the right pigeonhole in too short a
    time.

In other woids, whoEVER approved these names did a disservice to both
    products. ymmv of course.

BTW, I for one *have* come to know & love Roelof's style -- esPEcially
    the irreverence :-)

Now don't get confused between irreverence and irrelevance... :>

Yes, they're all the semantic equivalent of "Blah, blah, blah".
