Well, here it is.... as (I believe) we all have been conditioned to
expect. I agree that it may be speculative, but NOT highly speculative
nor erroneous. I wish the short rebuttal pointed out at least what the
errors are :-) Seems like Mr. Bliss has reasonably credible sources,
    wouldn't you say??

    Any of you heard differently??

As a clarification, Corporate Public Relations says the story in Computer
Reseller News On-Line (see below) is highly speculative and erroneous. If
you happen to receive any calls, pass them to [deleted]. We will
forward them to Nikki Richardson in Corporate PR, Nikki is the spokesperson
on these issues.

Digital Layoffs Are Coming
5/28/96
By Jeff Bliss
Maynard, Mass.
.............

Digital Equipment Corp. is expected to lay off thousands of employees by July
1, according to sources at the company.

The job cuts would be made across Digital's nine business units, sources said,
but would focus heavily on Multivendor Customer Services (MCS) and the
Systems Business Unit (SBU, sources said. "The big push is on to cut expenses,"
said one Digital insider.

Several sources inside the company estimated that as many as 10,000 employees
could be eliminated. Digital currently employs about 60,000 employees, down
from a high of 120,000 in the early 90s.

A Digital spokesperson admitted segments of the company are being restructured
but would not comment on the possibility of layoffs.

MCS is the service and support arm of the Maynard, Mass headquartered company,
and the SBU manufactures high-end systems and software that run on the 64-bit
Alpha chip.

Employees will be notified of the job cuts and other details of the
restructuring before the end of the company's fiscal year on June 30. "It'll
probably happen in the next two or three weeks," a source said. The job cuts
will be a result of the consolidation of divisions, sources said.

The company recently announced the Storage Business Unit, a group that has
experienced double-digit growth in recent years, would be incorporated into
the SBU.

Digital is also combining its fast growing Windows NT business into the
Personal Computer Business Unit., which recently exited the retail computer
business and posted an unprofitable third quarter.

The company also is clamping down on expenses, sources said.

"They're making it hard to do any travel," the source said.

About 500 jobs were cut earlier this year from MCS, which is restructuring in
the wake of sluggish business among Digital's installed base of customers.

If you're in the SBU, you've probably already been forwarded the memo
from Harry Copperman, "Subject: A: Eye on the Ball in Q4". His advice
is to focus on the strategic growth opportunities that he outlined and
    stop the wheel-spinning.

Mark, believe me, as a loyal foot soldier for Digital for over 8
years now, I DO keep my eye on the ball and honor my contract
with Digital (and yes, read that memo too). The company
however also has to "come up clean" in as much as it can, maybe
by simply stating what was so erroreous about that article, for
example. We are all grown up, have gone through the ringer a few
times, so we can take not-so-rosy news.

The writer of the article is way off base. Not to mention that, this
certain publication seems to have "it in" for us. This is the second
time in a couple of months that they have published very erroneous
information about Digital. Writers like him should be taken to task,
in a swift and orderly fashion.

All he's doing is quoting "sources" from inside the company. There are
people inside the company saying the kinds of things he paraphrases, so
he can't be too far off base. Now whether those "sources" know what
they're talking about remains to be seen.

It's interesting to me that there has been so little discussion of this
topic. That's certainly a change from what would've been the case if
you speculated a few years back that the company was going to cut 20% of
its workforce all at once.

    Mark,

Being basically naive, I'm one to panic at the mere mention
of some reputable(?) publication reporting something like
    		this.

I'm also of a mind that they should be "taken to task" if
the info is crapola but, experience tells me that these
"Stories" usually spring from some seed of truth (no matter
how much they're bastardized in the final version ie 10
    		becomes 100, 1000 becomes 10,000).

Though it might be foolish of me to think that one of the
functions of DIGITAL P.R. is to rebut these type of things,
it would certainly make me, as well as a ton of other folks
I'll betcha, feel better to have them do just that.

Anything other than a "swift and orderly" task-taking only
serves to perpetuate this type of rumor.

A note on Rumors coming from this notes file in the past.

I would speculate that 85% of the time rumors reported here
have come true in the past. Ive been with the company 19 years and
the lack of "notes flying" indicates one thing maybe two....

No ones left..... to write notes

No one cares........... ie sees the futility of it!

The correct title for the Chicago Bulls is Champions of the Eastern
part of the NBA. The finals does start tonight, and won't complete
for another few weeks; at that point we'll have an NBA World
Champion.

My prediction, a 5 or 6 game series. I don't think the Sonics will
sweep in 4.

I would've thought they were more medicine/health related. As in:
"Dr. Kevorkian, another Digital employee to see you!"
