2607.0. "Remodelling" by XANADU::GANAPATHI () Wed Aug 04 1993 15:38

I have been following the vigorous discussion about shutting
down non-business notes files and the resulting cost savings
to the company.

On the other hand, I have heard that (atleast) two VP's,
Ed Lucente and John Rando are having their offices in Stow
remodelled (specifically with mahagony panelling!)

Can anyone that works in Stow confirm this? Is there a
lot of construction activity going on in Stow?

       There's a LOT of work being done in Stow, with what used to be
    cubicle areas being made into entirely new floor-to-ceiling offices.

       Go figure.

    VPs are still moving in & out of the mill, offices being remodeled,
    groups being moved from floor to floor, etc. Sometimes it looks just
    like old times, when the cost of this stuff wasn't a concern.

2607.4restructuring??HIBOB::KRANTZNext window please.Thu Aug 19 1993 21:4310
Colorado Springs (CXO) has been doing a fair amount of remodeling too. And
scheduling more. It is supposedly being paid for by money put aside by the
company for restructuring (i.e. all the restructuring money isn't for TFSO?!?!)
Does anyone know what else the restructuring money pool can be used for?

The goal is to empty enough sections of the building (200K square feet?)
to be able to rent it externally or gain some tax benefit - does
anyone know the details surrounding idle floor space and taxes?

2607.5Tax Incentives for closing Office.?SUBWAY::CATANIAFri Aug 20 1993 03:4811
    Here in LIO there seems to be something like what -.1 mentions. They
    are mothballing a good portion of the office space to receive some kind
    of tax benefit for not moving to smaller offices. Meanwhile their
    cramming the field Engineers into small and I do mean small working
    spaces. not even big enough to call a cube.

    Can't wait to see the size of my new cube, wonder where they will put
    all my stuff. Why does the goverment give these tax breaks anyways!

    Shheesh.

2607.6RE: .5 - There's a move afoot in the ALF facility to also ...YUPPIE::COLEFollow your elected leadership .... Baaaaaaaaaaa!Fri Aug 20 1993 13:269
	... move all of us (left!) into one side or the other (if you've
ever beeto ALF, you know what I mean). They've already closed the
downtown Atlanta office (ATO).

	The big question is what will become of the empty side.
Mothball, sub-let, sell the facility and lease-back? Apparently the
mothball idea is high on the list. I'm not sure of all the tax
ramifications, but I've heard that once you mothball, it's hard
(impossible???) to ever recoop your investment.

Here at RCO (Rochester, NY), they are also planning to move everyone to one
side of the building and either sublet or shutdown the empty portion of the
building.

    Visited friends last week in LJO2, former stomping grounds of PCSG,
    the survivors of most of whom have by now decamped to LKG. The
    back-half of the building -- that huge bay of standard DEC cubies,
    where I was first baptized into DEChood, is mostly unchanged. The
    front half looks to being stripped down to the bare concrete and outer
    roof & skin, in preparation for who knows what as Central Engineering
    Management moves in. I could see a few more high-wall offices being
    constructed -- these are senior managers after all -- but it struck me
    as more than that was underway. I'll know more after my next visit.

    actually remodeling is always good to do once in a while, it bring
    fresh outlook to the work place after it is remodeled, may be add
    new color to the walls, or put new plant in the cubicles and things
    like that.

    change is good for you, i also heard that changes in surroundings
    can increase your outlook and bring new ideas and new vision.

    so overall, i support remodeling on contingency by contingency basis.

Besides, when remodeling there's always that great smell of fresh paint. Things
in this company seem much clearer when sniffing paint fumes ;-) ;-) ;-)
