4663.0. "No mentioning of OpenVMS?" by OSOSPS::KAGEYAMA (Trust, but Verify) Fri Jun 14 1996 04:02

I'm wondering why OpenVMS is omitted from the followin artile, based on
the supposition that Rdb is running on the OpenVMS(I know it could be
run on Digital UNIX, though.) If this is truly an OpenVMS system, why
don't we claim so. And you can claim Digital UNIX if it is the case.

But considering the fact that we continuously revealed the UNIX and
Orcacle benchmark results, I strongly doubt that we hide or intentionally
omit OpenVMS and Oracle Rdb information in the marketing sense. And the
the lack of OpenVMS in "Digital Services" announcement enforces my
observation. Any comments?

Digital - Hungarian Copyright Office protects intellectual property with
	64-bit Alpha/Oracle system
	{Livewire, Worldwide News, 12-Jun-96}
What do pop star Michael Jackson, stage producer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and
Oscar-winning film director Istvan Szabo have in common? They all receive
royalties from the Hungarian Copyright Office, Artisjus (from the Latin words
"artis" [of art] and "jus" [right]).
Artisjus collects and distributes royalties on behalf of both domestic and
foreign holders of intellectual property licenses. Sales of such properties
 are growing phenomenally in Hungary.
A 64-bit AlphaServer 8400 computer from Digital Hungary enables Artisjus to
manage soaring transaction volumes without adding staff. The data center
comprises the AlphaServer 8400 computer, an AlphaServer 1000 computer for
application development, and a VAX 6000 computer.
"The 64-bit processing power of Alpha computing greatly increases our
productivity, enabling us to work smarter and faster as we manage growth, and
provide stable, efficient services that are crucial to Hungary's free-market
economy," says Melinda Pinter, head of computing at Artisjus, which employs
150 staff at seven offices. "With our AlphaServer 8400 [system], we have more
than tripled our output without adding staff."
The AlphaServer 8400 computer runs the Oracle Rdb relational database
system. Artisjus runs its entire infrastructure on this platform, which
supports a suite of applications that track daily purchases of registered
properties, calculate royalties, record collections, and pay rights holders
via electronic funds transfer. The system allows staff to access ever-larger
databases, quickly execute complex transactions, and pay royalties on the same
day of transaction to protect rights holders from currency fluctuations.
"Digital's Alpha system offers the only proven 64-bit processing as well as
the most flexible, robust, and cost-effective architecture on the market,"
says Pinter. "The unique scalability of Digital systems has enabled us to
smoothly upgrade to faster processors, and even advance to next-generation
 Alpha computing without disrupting production."
As its transaction volume continues to climb, Artisjus plans to enhance its
Alpha/Oracle platform with VLM64 capability. This option will enable it to
fully exploit the power of 64-bit computing to store virtually unlimited
volumes of information in main memory.

4663.1Digital is a HARDWARE company!INDYX::ramRam Rao, PBPGINFWMYFri Jun 14 1996 14:4814

I think this is another example of Digital being a "hardware company".
The operating system is a necessary evil needed to sell the box. Hence
a large fraction of our success stories, highlight the box, but neglect
to mention the operating system. Also if you look at the analyses
available internally of competitors systems, it is almost exclusively a
hardware comparison, with extreme neglect for operating system feature
comparison.

Services (MCS). MCS will be focused on the highest level of

            return on their investment.

I would guess that "installed base" would include OpenVMS but...??

I'm surprised that with NT being the main thrust that someone hasn't mentioned
that old one egg, one basket that they use to complain about when it was VAX
and VMS. I know. NT works on many platforms.

re .4,

First of all, you misspelled OpenVMS.

OpenVMS generates quite a bit of profit for this company. Not mentioning it as
part of a major win does not help the false general impression that Digital is
slowly abandoning OpenVMS. Mentioning it may indeed help in the continuation of
your paycheck.
