3502.0. "Who do I talk to for Oracle kit info" by ANGLIN::PEREZ (Trust, but ALWAYS verify!) Thu Nov 10 1994 15:31

Well, I've looked everywhere I know of, and even tried the
    RDB_TRANSITIONS notesfile with no luck...

Can ANYONE out there give me the name of the person inside Digital who
handles/is handling kits, licensing, and products for Oracle (not the
GOOD product they just bought, the one they've always had!)? I've been
tasked to become Oracle knowledgeable and I need to put a full Oracle
environment on a PC or VMS system (preferrably the PC).

SUPPOSEDLY some months ago there was a program to get kits from Oracle
and distribute them within Digital, but it doesn't appear to have
    happened (at least not here)...

BTW: I'd prefer an ACTUAL, LIVING, PHONE-ANSWERING, KNOWLEDGEABLE
HUMAN - I've already talked to way to many voicemails and never gotten
return calls (but perhaps that's a reply for the "You KNOW you're in
    trouble when..." note)...

And, yeah, I KNOW we can just call Oracle and buy one, but if they have
to pay the street price it AIN'T gonna happen...

Is this U.S. only? Please post an update.

Thanks,
Dave.
3502.3Oracle Program OfficeASABET::SILVERBERGMy Other O/S is UNIXFri Nov 11 1994 09:4016
The Oracle Program Office is being built under Bud Enright. There are
a number of Digital folks assigned to various activities in the program
office. You can certainly contact Steve Wittenberg @WRO, Fran Murar
@BXB, or Mark O'Connell @MLO who works for Bud in the Database Program
    Office.

Getting Oracle products distributed by Digital is one of the Reseller
agreements being developed under the new Preferred Strategic
Relationship program with Oracle, along with the sales of the Rdb &
associated assets. The program office noted aboe is the place for all
    that information.

    Thanks for the names...

I've now called no FEWER THAN 7 DIGITAL PEOPLE, all of whom were
supposed to have some connection to oracle licensing/kits/whatever...
NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM WAS AVAILABLE! WHERE THE &(^%^$%# IS
    EVERYBODY?

So far, I've gotten 7 voice mails and left messages on all of them.

All of the major groups (Digital, Oracle, and the Rdb Group that will join
Oracle) are interested and involved in assuring the future success of the
Rdb and DBA Workcenter products business. As such, there are individuals
working in all of these groups.

In ZKO, soon to be in the East Coast Development Center in Nashua, are the
following people who will make up the Oracle Rdb Product Management group.
Except as noted, we are all on WILBRY::.

	The situation is this:

We do have an agreeement to distribute Oracle 7.xx and related tools
freely within Digital for demo and sales purposes. If this is the
purpose and it is not for development, then you should be able to
contact your local Demonstration Center personnel and get a copy
from them. They are the ones who are supposed to be distributing
this software. If that doesn't work contact Paul Bass @OHF, he is
co-ordinating this effort. Paul's number along with all the regional

The plan is tho have Oracle s/w in all of these centers. They will be
authorized to allow specialists to make copies of the s/w for their
personal use. I don't believe the Oracle s/w has yet shipped to these
cneters.

OK, there's good news on the Oracle front...

> a number of Digital folks assigned to various activities in the program
> office. You can certainly contact Steve Wittenberg @WRO, Fran Murar

> Office.

I got a call back from Fran Murar who wasn't the right person. BUT, I
also talked to Bud Enright who gave me some information - yes, once the
sales agreement (for Rdb) is signed, there will be something put in
place to get copies of Oracle products for different purposes inside
Digital. He referred me to Bob Gangi who I spoke to this morning. Bob
also indicated that once things were settled there would be a program
in place. Because I'm part of DC (or whatever we are THIS week), Bob
referred me to Bob Johnson, who is supposed to be representing DC in
this process of getting the products. So, next I'll call Bob Johnson
and probably leave him some voicemail...

BTW: As far as getting demo stuff for internal use - good idea, bad
implementation - as far as I know, our "local demo center" people don't
    have Oracle.

So, for all you out there who've been sending mail saying you're having
the same problem - hang in there - there are still people in the
company TRYING to get us the tools to learn and do the job...

If you are interested in Oracle/DOS, then the easiest way to get it may
be to buy it from Oracle. O used to (1990) have a $99 special for
    DOS: full development Oracle/DOS license, SQL*Plus, SQL*Forms,
SQL*ReportWriter, SQL*Menu, full docset. At this price there was a size
limitation on databases (nothing too restrictive) and you did not get any
precompilers (Pro*C, ...) , but they were fairly inexpensive.

If the gears keep churning and no solution is in sight, you might
    call O. Time vs $.

OK dudes, and dudettes... WE HAVE LIFTOFF!

I finally talked to Bob Johnson. He requested that I send him
electronic mail detailing my problem and needs, and he'll be using this
as a start since he KNOWS that I'm not the only one who'll be needing
    to do Oracle stuff...

It won't be immediate. They have to get everything handled to finalize
the deal with Oracle, but once that's out of the way he indicated that
a process will be put in place to get the necessary 3rd part products
    into the field.

Now, can we talk about Sybase!

I'm an outsourcing consultant and I have a customer who would
like digital to supply a WinNT Server with Oracle Workgroup2000,
    and case tools (Designer, Developer).

These will be digital owned systems, and digital will own the support
    of such (and the licenses...).

So I need to know how to order it, how do I pay for it, and how much
it'll cost. The client tools will be used by about 6 people

    Jeff,

You and/or your manager should contact Jessalyn Sullivan and ask her how to
procede. If Jessalyn can't help you, she'll know somone who can.
Depending on the details of the contract your customer has with Digital,
you may be covered by one of the contracts Digital has negotiated with
Oracle for use of their products. Outsourcing deals involving Oracle
products can be very complicated. It took us months to get the DirecTv
license and support contracts worked out.
