3986.0. "5 different company names in windows 95" by SMURF::SNAMAN () Thu Jul 13 1995 02:34

    Sad by true:

From the Windows 95 Add New Hardware Wizard dialog we have 5 different
names listed for the company. I almost missed the DEC listing because
it was separated from the others. We are not alone with this problem
but we are by far the worst case. To find this list, launch the Add
new harware wizard and select the Other Devices option when asked to
make a choice of Hardware type in a list box. I post this here
because I don't know who fix the problem.

    Manufacturers: Models:
    ---------------------------------------------------
    Digital many printers
    Digital Equipment many ethernet adapters
Digital Equipment Corp. 6 graphics cards
    Digital Equipment Corporation 2 modems
DEC 2 more modems (must be different group)

HP has 3 different listings:

Hewlett Packard
Hewlett-Packard
HP

In fact, a few other companies have multiple entries, including IBM, TI and what
appears to be different divisions of Microsoft itself.

    GASP!! !!SHOCK HORROR!!
You mean that the Corporate Entities denoted by

    "HP"
        and
    "Hewlett Packard"

        ARE ONE AND THE SAME??
OmiGOSH, they certainly need aNOTHER Corporate Identity Program...

        (Thanks to their $5M ad campaign & re-signage in 1990-1992, I
         already knew that

    "Hewlett Packard"
is the same Corporate Entity as
    "Hewlett-Packard".

Well, we're all consistent. The rest of you folks should fix things up.

I asked, and obtained the attached responses from two different people
involved with the Windows 95 product within Digital. It seems like the
problem is mostly caused by Digital.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We've asked Microsoft about this many times, and the basic problem is that
we as a corporation still are confused as to what we are - these fields are
created by different organizations within both Digital and Microsoft, and we're
DEC, Digital, Digital Equipment, etc. as far as the Digital and Microsoft
engineers are concerned.

Bottom line is that we've asked Microsoft to fix it, but it's a VERY low
priority for them - basically a suggestion.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The reason that different names and entries exist is because different groups
within Digital (e.g., printer, network) submit entries to Microsoft. We don't
have control over how Microsoft handles these submissions.

The problem has been formally winbugged. The response was that Microsoft was
not going to change such a minor/cosmetic problem here at crunch time.

So who are we? So far I've seen:

DEC
Digital
Digital Equipment
Digital ltd
Digital Equipment ltd
Digital Equipment Co
Digital Equipment Co ltd
Digital Equipment Corporation
Digital Equipment Corporation ltd
Digital Equipment Company
Digital Equipment Company ltd

and that's not to mention the many varieties of capitals!

re .-1

If I've got it right, you're talking about two distinct
companies there.

	Digital Equipment Corporation.

and

	Digital Equipment Company, Ltd.

The former is a USA corporation, the latter is
a company registered in the UK (and owned by the
former, I expect).

re.5/6:

The UK subsidiary is "Digital Equipment Co. Limited" and not any of the
variations mentioned in either .5 or .6
