5181.0. "HiNote Ultra spotted in Advil commercial" by MBALDY::BRUCE (our middle name is 'Equipment') Wed Mar 12 1997 04:13

I saw a HiNote Ultra in an Advil commercial on TV tonight.

    No kidding!

Did we pay to have it placed there or did the advertisement designer
put it there because it looks cool?

With our luck, it'll be the cause of the headache for which Advil is the cure.

Was watching INK on Monday evening -- in Kate's office, on the
bookshelf are two of our old software cases -- the light blue or gray
ones that manuals would slide into - along with the old DIGITAL logo
and gold sticker..... thought it was interesting that I haven't seen
those cases internally for years yet here they are on her bookshelf as
    props!
5181.4It was in FORTUNE - an editorial/commentary column34937::DANZAKThu Mar 13 1997 02:0413
The 'hi note' was written up in the back of FORTUNE about 2 months ago
as being 'the only laptop to have'. I don't think that Digital noticed
it or said much about it. (A shame) I never understood why we
couldn't market our stuff thur CompUSA etc. Seemed like we did another
'typical Digital' thing of 1/2 went into it with them and 1/2 out.

But as long as we consider 'advertising' discressionary spending
instead of integral in product manufacturing - we will continue to have
our head in the sand and spiral down in a market driven by ads and
    drumming up need.

The hinote was also shown on ABC news about two weeks ago.
The story was about blind people using laptops inconjunction with
GPS system to find their way around cities.
The product was developed by a Silicon Valley company whose name
was something like Archstone. By using GPS readout fed into the
laptop. One of the programs in the laptop, lays out all the city
streets and major landmarks and their corresponding grid location.
So the individual will say where they want to go and step by step
the computer will navigate them to their location by verb commands

That was Arkenstone, showing off their "strider" .. not only did the
demo system use a HiNote, the astute observer would notice the DECtalk
Express in the top of the case..

(you can buy the system without the laptop, and use most any laptop you
want.. but you always get the DECtalk Express..)

(we had one of the first proto Striders in MRO last year to help
Arkenstone shake out the system.. neat stuff..)

The Hinote VP535 just received an Editor's Choice Award from Windows NT
Magazine! The Ultra II got a good review as well. Additionally, in
the sidebar on service and support, the reviewers had nothing but good
things to say about Digital. I thought this was great since directly
above the note on Digital's service and support was the note on
Compaq. Compaq didn't fare to well!

I hope our PCBU marketing plays this up in their promotions.

Doesn't Digital MCS provide Compaq's service and support.....?

    And who provides DIGITALS service?

I was channel surfing Saturday afternoon and happened upon the Downhill
races on Wide World of Sports. Boy, was I surprised to see the DIGITAL
logo across the chest and down the arm of the skier they were focusing
on -- from Scandanavia and in second place in the overall standings --
sorry I can't remember his name! That was definitely a surprise.

Yes, Digital sponsored the Norwegian Men's team this winter - a good choice,
as at least one of them usually finishes in the Top 3.

RE: INK - The blue boxes looked like DECmateII documentation. I just
laughed when I saw those thinking today we use laptops and I thought
the DMII was great replacement for the typewriter!

I also saw a notebook on a HBO show. It was an interview with
somebody... he was not familiar to me but the laptop was.

    Not digital.

If customer calls csc(800-354-9000) for laptop support they are told to
call back the same number again and press 4,7,3,1. If they dont have
touchtone service they are told to call 1-888-473-1500, where they get
a recording that says if you need technical support or service call the
csc, and then it disconnects them.

    Great Service...

888-471-1500 was the number for the repair center (laptops) in Santa
    Clara. Numbers got consolidated.

Warranty Support is 800-554-3333, selecting the appropriate menu choices
for your notebook gets you to the repair center in Santa Clara.
