3973.0. "what gives?" by TROOA::TEMPLETON (Built for Comfort not Speed) Wed Jul 05 1995 02:17

Why, when I send a simple answere to some-one in the Ucraine, it can
not be received, they can send a message to me, but, what ever I try to
send back to them gets a "postmatser message"

Is there some kind of net in mid europe that we can not penertrate.

Correct spelling (in English) is Ukraine, with a 'k' not a 'c'.

If you get a 'postmaster' message, like 'unrecognised recipient', it
can mean that you have the name or location wrongly spelt. Computers
are very stupid; one letter wrong is all it takes.

Please forward me your postmaster reject (to Ron Sherman @ALF) and I'll
try to help you with the addressing.

3973.5Tex on correct verbalizationDPDMAI::EYSTERLivin' on refried dreams...Mon Jul 10 1995 14:246
Yes, spelt is correct. Appropriate usage is "Mama! Ah spelt mah
milk!". It is *not* correct usage as follows: "Mama! Ah set fer a
spelt in the corner!". Correct usage would be "Mama! Ah got mah butt
    whipped at school".

The latter shows our educational system is doing its job.

> spelt in the corner!". Correct usage would be "Mama! Ah got mah butt

Where did you go to school. That's past tense. It should be...

"Mama! Ah got mah butt whupped at school".

My dictionary (Chambers 20th Century) gives both "spelled" and
"spelt" for the past tense of "spell". As "spelt" is listed second,
   I suppose it's less preferred.

I believe that "spelt" is also a kind of wheat (or "Weet").

My dictionary lists spelt (pref.) and spelled as correct usage.

Spelt is, indeed, a type of wheat, Triticum Spelta, grown in parts of
southern Europe.

    Re. .7, .9 & others...

I believe the author of .9 is, like myself, in the UK (do many Americans
understand the personal name 'lager lout'?). I don't know where LINGO::
is, but if it is in the US then that may account for the different
ordering of 'spelt' and 'spelled' in the author's dictionary.

do you mean as in the type of washer, or as in `like far out man'? Perhaps
both, maybe neither.

LINGO is in the UK (REO). My Chambers Dictionary was published in

Few Americans know what "lager lout" means. I've only heard it used in
a very derogatory way, FYI. One Brit I worked with described lager
louts as "The kind of alcoholic bums that go to the cheapest place on
their vacations where they can purchase alcohol in mass quantities,
sleep in hovels or gutters, throw up in restaurants, and generally give
the English tourist a bad name overseas until their funds run out or
    they're deported".

She used the term also to describe the horde of English contractors we
get here in the US on questionable visas, with questionable pasts, that
seem to have gone through most of their employment options in their own
country and are now doing so in ours.

It must mean different things to different Brits, because I can't
imagine, based on what I was told or have heard since, why anyone would
have it as their personal name. Y'all wanna enlighten us with your
definition and reason for choosing it? I've always wondered but never
    asked.

re .16, that's pretty accurate, except for the accent. Hobbies are
drinking, farting, puking and going down the football to abuse the
ref.

re .17, me reputation seems to go before me anyway, the PN can't make
it any worse!

    Hi Ron,

Thanks for your offer of help but I think it was just a glitch in the
system, when I tried to reply again it worked.

In case you are wondering why my reply is so late, I'm on vacation and
only head for the PC when the heat and humidity gets to the point where
it would boil your head to stay out there any longer.
