2683.0. ""Dorio" brand name for new line of terminals" by TOOK::MORRISON (Bob M. LKG1-3/A11 226-7570) Wed Sep 22 1993 22:25

I just read on Livewire (and will post later, if I have time), that Digital
will market a new(?) line of terminals (thru distributors and resellers only)
under brand name Dorio. This is obviously taken from Georges Doriot, a cofounder
of Digital, with the "t" removed to make the spelling phonetic.
What do others think of this brand name. I am uneasy. In the 1950's, Ford
chose the name of an executive and family member for the name of a new car.
That name was Edsel. I hope history doesn't repeat itself.

See MR4SRV::MARKETING, topic 64.8 et seq.

The name "Dorio" is NOT derived from Gen. Doriot's name. The
coincidence, to quote the product manager, is "an odd coincidence".

"Dorio" was one of those random non-words that professional advertising
agencies come up with. There will be an advertising campaign soon to
build up brand name awareness. It doesn't mean anything right now.

More details on the Dorio terminal are posted in ONTIME::TERMINALS,
topic 2724. (It's cousin, the VT510, is discussed in topic 2711 of the
    same conference.)

[I hope we sell a million of 'em. I could use a new T-shirt.]

"Dorio", sounds like something someone would eat. Dough-ree-oh, three
syllables, will probably be referred to by a shorter name. Let's
order 800 new "dories". In all seriousness it is good to see some
new products and functionality in our offerings. I hope they become
as popular as the VT100's. Good news for a change!

I *like* the coincidence. From what I can read of Gen. Georges Doriot,
he was a neat old coot, the kind of mentor that any entrepreneur would
give his eye teeth to be nurtured by. Take a read of "Digital At Work
-- Snapshots of the First Thirty-Five Years" and you'll get a few great
glimpses of a great man indeed.

If this product line succeeds (and I wish it well) then great. I
personally predict that the name will not be any sort of albatross.

(But then again, what do I know -- I was born & raised in Swampscott MA
USA, whose chief claim to fame was that its local fishermen perfected
the rowed utility boat, known till this day (within a shrinking radius)
    as the "Swampscott Dory.")

    :-)

(Potential rathole:) Imho the entire abovementioned book is WELL worth
reading, aside from the inevitable self-congratulation and
self-delusion of an effort done by our own Digital Press, that was
published during the beginning of the hemorrhages of the '90s, but
that's another story for another basenote.

I'm surprised so many of you missed the real story behind the term/word
    "Dorio".

Remember is the Wizard of OZ? The wicked witch's henchmen were shown
marching into the castle. As they marched they chanted:

      "Dor-re-o, Dorrrr-re-o. Dor-re-o, Dorrr-re-o."

Of course if it's not successful, the definition of a Dorio cookie
might be two Dorio terminals used as bookends ... ;^)

    Nice touch after the General!

When I first heard the name I though of a mexican chip snack, then
further thinking about it, I thought of a chocolate cookie with vanilla
    filling.

    Hmmm.....making me hungery....time for lunch.

I hope we sell millions, naw, tens of millions! Robin laid an egg,

2683.7The "Andrea Doria"NYOS01::ROTHMANIPL31, or bust..Thu Sep 23 1993 18:037
My first association with the name was thinking of the ill-fated
Italian ocean liner, the "Andrea Doria". Unfortunately, this
magnificent ship was rammed, and sunk, a few years back, off the U.S.
East Coast (by the Stockholm, I think). All I could think of was a
line of terminals named after a sinking ship..

Not too far from the truth. Word is that they will only be available
for sale by the trailer load or 1/2 trailer load to distributors!

    Never a dull moment 8*)

I'm satisfied that this new terminal will find a niche as a VAR product
and make enough money for the corporation to consider it successful.
What I'm more concerned with is the subtle hint at another branding
campaign debacle. Wouldn't this just be throwing good money after bad?
If the purpose with this new terminal is to distance the product from
any perceived negative factors from its manufacturer, why isn't building
some sort of brand recognition here considered counter-productive?
I'm lost again, but lately I've been getting used to it.

In the few brief replies here the recognition of the name Dorio elicited
quite easily: the Edsel, the Andrea Doria, snack food, a row boat, and
a tune from the musical Wizard of Oz. Keep in mind we paid somebody to
come up with this unobtrusive name.

I like the sound of "Dorio". The logo is fresh and snappy, also.

It's certainly better than IBM's "Lexmark" printer line. Lexmark. Sounds like
you'd order it from late-night TV.

re .3, here we go down the rathole or is out to sea in a dorio?
I built one of those guys and I am planning to build another, and I
know this has nothing to do with the Digital Dorio, but they are
great boats for rowing and sailing, so let's hear it for the
Swampscott Dorio and the Maynard Dorio and the General Doriot.

It all looks great that products are generated, Dorio?, Alpha ect.
But the thing that bugs me is the fact that up till today I NEVER SEE
ADDS PRINTED in the wellknown worldwide magazines and local papers
regarding DEC(DIGITAL) products. I have INC. 500, Fortune and a dutch
magazine named Quote. I stumble over the IBM(plank over creek)adds,
Ambra(sp?)PC, Intel, Pentium, MS DOS 6.1 SW adds but where the #$@@
are those other then those sometimes appearing cryptic Digital adds
    nobody really understands?
