      To the best of my knowlege it's still on...
    
      We got mail this morning here in TAY (Littleton)  announcing
    that  September 29th would be the day for   PKO, CFO, HNO, KNX, LCT,
    MSO, VRO, TAY, AND LKG,  and looking for Volunteers (Or paid if WC2)
    to man the gates.

    I had heard that Digital pays a year in advance for Canobie, so
    this year was already paid for.  Don't know if there will be any
    more in the future.

    In the last issue of DTW in Maynard, the entire Canobie Lake schedule
    is published.  Us folks in TTB are going Sunday Oct. 6.

I'm sure this has been revealed elsewhere, but who is eligible for the Canobie
lake "outing"? and what, if anything, does it cost the employee?

	We should have Canobie Lake for the remaining DEC Employee's

	and their families, because with all the layoff's (voluntary + invol)
	
	Plant closings (and their was a lot) the money saved should be spent

	on the one's that are left to carry on DEC'S BUSINESS!   

    Probably not relevant to the discussion but I wish there were a
    choice of two alternate days. A Saturday and a Sunday. My problem
    I guess but the site day I have prior commitments and my wife works
    Saturday's. Personnel has been no help. The company says no exceptions.
    This is the first time in twelve years that this has happened. No big
    deal really.
    
    On the scope of things this is a pretty trivial matter. I just wanted
    to air a bit of frustration.

All employees at sites in eastern Mass and southern New Hampshire, as far as I 
can guess.  See the site list back a couple.
It's the employee outing day, no charge for employees and their immediate
families.
Canobie Lake Park is a minor league amusement park from the old mold,
not a theme park like Busch Gardens or Disney.
Food (burgers, hot dogs, corn, soda, ice cream) is catered by Tobin's,
the cafeteria people.  Again, free.

    	If you know someone from a another facility who would
    	being going on the day you would like to go and who
    	would be willing to swap tickets ...  I know people
    	who have done this regularly over the years.

	I debated with myself whether to post to note, or chalk it off to
	experience.  I guess you can see who won...

	There are a lot of notes in this and other conferences wondering why
	things are changing for the worse.  Some blame society, some blame
	economic conditions, some blame anybody but themselves.  It appears
	to me that the problem is within the family structure, and the lack
	of control parents seem to want to teach their children.  Maybe the
	problem is that adults see that the only way to succeed is to push
	hard, and to ignore the 'little' people around you.  This attitude
	has been taught to many of the children, and was evident this weekend.

	My family had the opportunity to attend the Canobie Lake outing this
	past weekend.  For my children it was a day of fun and family, for
	my wife and I, it was a day of frustration.  We have always tried to
	teach our children right from wrong.  However, what do you tell your
	child when he sees other children (urged on by the parents) to ignore
	waiting in line, pushing little children, all in the name of getting
	on a kiddy ride?

	I sometime wonder if I'm hurting my children by letting them be some
	what passive.  When a kid cuts in line, and the parent doesn't step
	in, my child will complain to the kid, and to me.  What do you say,
	"It's all right..  You'll still get a turn"...  Does that teach the
	wrong message to both children.  To my child it says "Even though
	it hurts, you know you're right..", and to the other kid it teaches
	them "Push ahead.. and don't regard other people.."

	Many times I looked at the parent to see if they would do the right
	thing..   Unfortunately, more times than not, the parent wouldn't
	even attempt to correct the situation.  These same parents will be
	wondering why their children have no respect for them or for the law
	in later years.

	Do I sound like I'm rambling ??  Maybe so.. 

	I probably should have posted this message in the PARENTING notesfile,
	but I think this issue is a problem not just for those parents, but
	for the Digital family.

	Comments are welcomed.. However, I am a mostly read-only participant
	in this conference...

    Um, there are single people, divorced people, people without offspring,
    and people in relationships who don't choose to marry who
    
    	- have a strong sense of ethics and responsibility
    	- care about other people
    	- believe in 'doing the right thing' even when it's inconvenient
    	- work for the good of society as well as themselves

    Of course, we all know that the world is going to hell in a hand cart    
    (as it always has been).  But you didn't visit the same Canobie Lake
    park as I did.  Mine was crowded, with very long lines, too.  But the
    people were almost uniformly pleasant, patient, and polite, and
    displaying well ordered queuing behavior.  I was happily surprised. 
    There were thousands of people there, but seemingly fewer jerks than
    the law of averages usually produces.

    	Speaking of sewing the seeds of America's destruction, I think
    it is only fair to point out that the religious right (you know,
    the same people who believe in the apocalyptic end of the world)
    have been quite successful in getting their chosen U.S. presidential
    candidates elected to office in the past several elections, and
    consequently, the U.S. judicial branch has also been stocked with
    ultra conservative judges.  Moreover, given the ongoing influence
    of the religious right over most U.S. congressional politics, then
    it is fair to say that the three power centers of the U.S. government
    are, and have been for some time now, quite squarely under the control
    of the religious right.  Therefore, when it comes to assigning blame
    for America's current problems, be sure to give credit for this
    "mess-up" [sic] society where credit is due.

    So,the religious right got the last few presidents elected and the
    religious right got the courts stocked with ultra-conservatives,eh
    McClure? Please tell us what other nasties they've done. Like maybe
    they're responsible for our current situation here at DEC?

    Although the subject touches my heart and faintly relates to DIGITAL
    (e.g how often do you notice "aggressive" as a positive attribute!)
    the moderators are right:
    
    For this conference to have (another) chance to survive, keep this
    stuff out of it! 
    Resource owners need more than "faintly relating" justifications
    to keep a "tolerated" misuse of company resources going !

    	First of all, I don't believe in deleting notes as I feel
    that the veil of secrecy does more harm than good by stirring
    up unintended controversies and mistrust in the conference.

    	Secondly, while I will admit to having engaged in a somewhat
    controverial topic, I intended no personal attacks in my note, so
    if the moderator warning about such personal attacks was directed
    at me, then I request further clarification and suggest that it be
    pointed out exactly what was so personal about my note (if correcting
    someone's spelling has been deemed a personal attack, then it is time
    to reexamine the entire educational system).

    	Finally, I will agree that this overall note string is riddled
    with ratholes, but it isn't the first time that has ever happened
    and I can't imagine it would ever be the last due to human nature.
    Typically when something like this happens, the participants are
    provided with pointers to another note (or even another conference)
    for such discussions.  I will therefore provide a pointer to the
    notesfile NOTED::UU (which is dedicated to free religious thought).

p.s.	If someone is insisting that I delete a note of mine, then I
    	really have no choice but to do so.  However, I would need to
    	first be contacted by someone with such a request, and I would
    	also need to know exactly which note needs to be deleted and why
   	(so as to have a better chance at resolving the real problem).

    I think Canobie Lake outing would be a lot better is it there was
    more security guards patrolling the area.  Seems the locals know
    about Digital having free days, with free food so they and their
    kids routinely climb over the fences for a free day courtesy of
    Digital.
