DEC BUYS DATA LOGIC'S UK-BASED FINANCIAL SYSTEMS BUSINESS...

Given that in its entire history, DEC has made only a handful of
tiny acquisitions, the minimaker yesterday signalled a major
change in strategy with the news that it had acquired the
Financial Systems Business of UK-based Raytheon Co subsidiary
Data Logic Ltd. The business employs more than 100 people and
specialises in information distribution systems for financial
dealing rooms, majoring on integration of Unix-based systems.
Its trading systems under Unix are installed in over 30 banks
across Europe and DEC is buying the business and employees lock,
stock and barrel. Terms of the acquisition have not been
disclosed.

What were the prior acquisitions? Were they so much smaller? When a
company with 125,000 employees buys one with 100, I consider it a "tiny"
acquisition.

Actually, I believe our acquisition of Trilogy (can you say Cupertino)
was much larger. However, I find it interesting that we're acquiring
a software manufacturer who appears to be in the Unix TP marketplace
    in Europe.

... about relations between the US side of management and the
European side, it doesn't surprise me at all. What I hear is that Europe has told
KO, JS, et. al. that's it's UNIX or nothing over there, period! If the US won't
support that, tough, they'll play their own game!
1252.5About this application...SDSVAX::SWEENEYPatrick Sweeney in New YorkWed Oct 31 1990 19:5310
Please, don't read too much into this.

This business about trading floors is highly specialized and
concentrated among a few companies in both the United States and
    Europe.

A "really big" year for any company in this business is closing 5
sales, but since each sale involves 50 to 500 workstations, it not
peanuts. There's a conference SICVAX::FINANCIAL_INDUSTRY where we talk
    about these applications.

This is not unprecedented. For example, our significant investment in
Scientific Calculations for PCB design systems, or our purchase more
recently of EDA Systems (now we have PowerFrame, probably the most
leading-edge product available from Digital today).

The few people who work for Data Logic are going to provide massive
leverage into the Trading Systems marketplace.

I hope we learn from this and do similar things in Concurrent
    Engineering.

The most important point about this is that we bought the company as
opposed to just investing. Finally, a smarter move. It avoids fiascos
like HP now owning a part of ASK, which owns a part of Ingres.
Which BTW, we had a prior interest in also!

I called Ingres in Denver the other day, and they now answer their
    phones "ASK-Ingres".
1252.8DEC....'Market driven'CSSE::BCLARKFri Nov 02 1990 19:218
Another aspect of the acquisition is the seriousness now being shown by
Digital regarding UNIX. We've stopped talking about it, now we are
taking action.......won't be too long before a customer can run VMS and
UNIX (excuse me..ULTRIX)on the same Platform. As an editorial aside,
Digital can not always expect to 'drive the market'; it is also market
    driven.

If by "platform" you mean "hardware", then VMS and ULTRIX already run on the
same platform. There are VAX implementations of each. If you mean "run VMS
and UNIX simultaneously on the same processor", then you have made an all-too-
common misinterpretation of the VMS/POSIX announcement.

Unless he's mentioning an unannounced product, a definite no-no.
