723.0. "HMO Choice - Pilgrim vs CMHC" by VINO::DZIEDZIC () Fri Feb 10 1989 11:55

Yes, indeed, it's time for "medical coverage roulette", where we
are asked to choose a health plan after being given VERY LIMITED
information as to the coverages provided by each provider.

The information packet I received described the new JH 1 & 2 plans.
No information AT ALL comparing the HMOs available to me. I think
this is a serious omission. If we're going to make an informed
choice, we should certainly be given the full information we need
    to make our choice.

ANYWAY, the question I MEANT to ask:

We currently have Family Health Plan (now Pilgrim). We've been
very pleased with them, but I notice their weekly charge is $9
MORE than Central Mass Health Care's weekly charge. I'd really
appreciate any responses from anyone who has dealt with CMHC to
help me decide whether or not it is worth the extra $9/week to
    stay with Pilgrim.

NO THANK YOU, I DON'T WANT ANY HMO VS HANCOCK DISCUSSIONS!

> No information AT ALL comparing the HMOs available to me. I think

First, if you really didn't get any information comparing
available HMOs, then talk to your PSA. You should have received
some information in your information packet, on the back of the
sheet that had your name and address. I found that this sheet
contained enough information for me to take my choice.

Since you know the relative costs of the plans, I suspect that
you did get the information sheet on HMOs because the only place
I saw the HMO costs was on that sheet.

Once you have the information sheet, compare Pilgrim and CMHC by
comparing the column of information on the sheet, and then by
calling them and asking for information:

o Ask for their detailed statement of coverage. They should
each have a booklet they can send you (you should already
have the booklet for Pilgrim). Compare the benefits in
            detail.

o Ask for a list of all locations. Having locations close
to your home or work can be a big advantage.

723.2General suggestions welcome, else use MAILDR::BLINNThere's a penguin on the telly..Fri Feb 10 1989 19:4211
Please send any explicit recommendations, either pro or con, to
VINO::DZIEDZIC by MAIL. They do not belong in this conference.
Additional suggestions on how to make intelligent comparisons
among available HMOs, and how to gather information, are more
than welcome, especially if they can be applied to more than
        just this one case.

        Thanks!
