3951.0. "Is this possible ?" by WELCLU::SHARKEYA (LoginN - even makes the coffee@) Wed Jun 21 1995 07:46

    Just a thought.

If we support the Dollar file system on NT and NT has clustering, does
this mean we could have mixed NT/VMS clusters one day ?

You might want to try this question in:

I believe Digital actually demo'd such a configuration (don't know
about the new FS) at TECHED in N'Orleans last March.

	No.

NT clusters have a similar theme to VMS clusters (availability,
scalability, single-system addressability) but the details are
completely different. The differences are deliberate design
choices, made because the NT world of the 1990s is not the same
as the VMS world of the 1980s.

There's a white paper somewhere describing the NT cluster
	design. Start at http://ntsg.ljo.dec.com/clusters/clhome.htm
        and go from there.

Further discussion probably doesn't belong here.
Try DECWET::WINDOWS-NT (I'll see you there).

Hmm. Well we've gotten "maybe", "we've shown it", and "no". All are
potentially correct -- depending on what you're asking.

Do we see a "cluster" in the traditional sense of the word -- with SCS,
shared physical devices, shared queuing, ... -- as the outcome of the
    Dollar on NT work? no.

Do we see high performance access to Dollar volumes from various NT
systems with single site semantics, and the ability to serially share
files between NT and OpenVMS? Yes. Do we think these Dollar volumes
will look like local NTFS or OFS volumes to the NT systems? Yes.

Finally, do we have Dollar on NT today, and have we shown it to anyone?
    NO.

.1 and .3 contain pointers to Dollar and NT cluster conferences.
Depending on your bent, please look in one of those places.

    Jim.

The VMS presentation I read said that .0 was a long term goal.
