3719.0. "Profit Sharing Program" by BOHIO::ECLASS (Edwin Class @CRO, Dtn 723-8303) Mon Feb 27 1995 12:37

    When and who had the initiative to establish the profit sharing
    program in Digital?  In MCS?

    The only reference is on note 279, 1987.

    Thank you for your feedback.

    I didn't know Digital had profit sharing.....

    I know we have "something"; not sure what it's called, but I don't
    think it's profitsharing....

    Please share more information...

    Thanks....>JPs

    Business unit vice presidents apparently do.

    At Larry Cabrinety's (VP/CPBU) Q195 employee meetings, he gave several
    measurable sales and profit-based goals, which if met or exceeded,
    would result in CPBU employees receiving some amount of profit sharing.

    MCS announced "SuccessSharing" where each and everyone of us gets a
    percentage of base salary if MCS makes the goals.
    Saw a brochure of my neighbors, and I asked to see it.
    We haven't been told about it "officially", but some groups had a
    meeting already.
    Sounds good to me!

SuccessSharing for MCS has been in place in Canada for 2 quarters. We received
a percentage of our salaries (in our case .5%) for Q1 and another for Q2.

The .5% is if we make budget. If we better it, then we get more. If we don't
make budget then it's less. This is now considered part of our new
compensation plan, i.e. *raises*.

At the end of the year we're supposed to get another % for the whole year
based on the results for the FY.

I guest it's an incentive program for everyone to pull their weight for the
benefit of everyone.

     Success sharing has also recently been announced in the Storage Business
Unit.

    So therefore goes pay for perfomance raises? That doesn`t surprise me!
    Does mgmt share in the same % or is theirs a higher percent?

Basically according to the memo, our Compensation Framework looks like this:

Base Pay +
  Success Sharing +
    Equity Adjustment

Equity Adjustment is defined as follows:

	Replaces the traditional salary program and will be applied in
	situations where:

	- critical skill sets for which external market indicates faster pay
	  accelaration
	- Key contributors
	- Individuals low in the salary range relative to others in the peer
	  group with similar performance
	- Promotions reflecting substantially increased responsibilities.

	"Such situations normally apply to fewer than half of all employees."

As far as I know managers get the same % as everyone else. Basically if we
ALL pull our weight then we ALL benefit.

    Are there any people out there getting stocks to stay with the company
    along with any raises?

    Thanks.

    Raises? Only vice presidents and above get those....

    As for stock, if you get anything, it's a stock option which allows
    you to buy Digital stock at a (supposedly) discounted price over the
    next 5 or 10 years. Can be nice if the stock goes up for a while.

    re: .8, .9

    People I know were given both stock grants(not options) and cash as an
    incentive to stay during the salary freeze. I was also amazing how
    some of these people were the first to get raises once the salary
    freeze came off in January.

    Oh, really? I suppose the rest of us should just have "Sucker"
    stamped on our foreheads...  Sigh.

3719.13MCS on target?CSC32::S_WASKEWICZWed Mar 01 1995 15:072

    Anyone know if we (MCS) are on target for the quarter?
3719.14KAOFS::B_VANVALKENBWed Mar 01 1995 15:186
    the success share in Canada is determined by district goals and as such
    has little to do with how MCS as a whole is doing or for that matter
    wether or not we are profitable.

    That's not fair: you MCS folks *were* the target, just a few quarters
    ago! Give someone else a chance!

3719.17Profit sharing algorithm. New Math?DELNI::KOPECFri Aug 25 1995 14:1815
Hi,

I had a question to ask of someone familiar with the algorithm for profit
sharing. (I did receive a memo about it many months ago but it's gone now.)

Since NPB announced a 7% profit sharing number for non-Sales employees, I
was assuming that the formula would be:

Payout before taxes = (Gross annual salary)*(.07)*(fraction of FY employed)

However this produces a number ~75% different than reality.

What's wrong with this picture?

Thx, Stan
3719.18DELNI::KOPECFri Aug 25 1995 17:086
    I just got the answer from HR. The algorithm is correct but the
    (fraction of FY employed) parameter is not granular enough to handle
    months, only quarters. Therefore if you started on January 23 (guess
    who?), you don't get 5/12 of the total but rather 1/4.
