3139.0. ""Taking no Notes on Alpha"" by LACV01::ROMANO (Don Romano - LACT IM&T) Fri Jun 03 1994 19:52

Another blurb in the same issue of Computerworld on Digital... just so
much good news. Odd if this is true... since Lotus Notes is one of the
fastest growing software products currently existing and it might be
nice to have it run on our hardware.

    TAKING NO NOTES ON ALPHA

As far as Lotus is concerned, there will be no Notes version on
Digital's Alpha AXP platforms. When asked what kind of relationship it
has with Digital, a Lotus executive siad, "We don't. DEC is weak. We
were having a discussions wit [Edward] Lucente [Digital's former head
of sales and marketing], but those ended when he left, and we haven't
picked them up with anyone else there."

Don - maybe you should send a copy of that article to Max Mayer (isn't
Max responsible for these kinds of partnerships?)...

    Which statement is false?

my .1 *was* a tad emotional wasn't it?

to be more specific, the assertion that negotiations with Lotus
about the Notes port et. al. have not continued in the wake of Ed's
departure is most certainly false....as I was/am not directly
involved with said negotiations, comment on their exact status
would be imprudent....I will say this though:

	1. Even an outside observer might note the Ed did not help us
bring these negotiations to closure....IMHO, his departure
from them was not necessarily a bad thing....

	2. I have reason to know that the Alpha Notes port HAS ALREADY
BEEN DONE and is running on a variety of Alpha NT boxes (although
its not necessarily final)....the Agreement has been held up
more by political issues than technical.....

	3. With 1. and 2. under your belt, if you reread the ComputerWorld
comments again, they sure seem like political wrangling, don't
	   they ;-)

	there, I feel better

Agreed. It is most frustrating to witness blunder after blunder and
    try to remain *unemotional*...

I don't know about "political wrangling", but I don't understand
        the strategy:

_1 Do you mean that this kind of Computerworld pages on Digital
                are good for us?

_2 "Alpha Notes port HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE" is " **COMPANY
CONFIDENTIAL**", otherwise if customers learn that, they
may want to buy our Alpha NT systems ;-)

Well... I'm glad to hear that the topic is not true. But as far as
external people are concerned it may be true. I would hope to see some
sort of rebuttal out there in Computerworld saying that this is false.
It's nice for us to know the truth... but for a large percentage of the
population... what they read is the truth.
