2968.0. "Marketing folks in marketing?" by BLIZZ::BLIZZARD (Mike Blizzard, Columbia SC Sales Support 367-6429) Wed Mar 30 1994 14:10

I just looked at the latest announcement in live wire regarding the new
vice president, Corporate Industry Marketing. I'm sure that Bruce is a
very capable person, but look at his background...

Over the last 25 years, Ryan has served Digital in a series of
business and financial management positions, including international
assignments in Australia and Ireland. Most recently, he headed the
Financial, Professional and Public Services Industries Business Unit.
Prior to that, he was vice president and corporate controller, where he
was instrumental in creating the corporate financial architecture and
developing financial information systems for Digital.

Where is his marketing experiernce? Did anyone happen to notice how
much marketing experience any of the new regional marketing managers have?
Again, I'm sure they are capable people, but they are a bunch of ex-sales
managers or engineers! Do they have the skills and knowledge on marketing
computers in the 90's? There only examples have been Digital's past
marketing attempts.

Why haven't we hired firms from Madison Avenue to really begin marketing
Digital's products and services?

They only way Digital is going to make it these days is to increase our
market share. We can't do that with "field of dreams" marketing. We need
new blood, with vast experience and training on modern marketing techniques.
People who can be innovative and are not constrained. We shouldn't be
concerned with how much an ad campaign will cost. We should be concerned with
how much money it will make!

Since when do we fill jobs with people who have the right background.

Mr. Lucente is the only notable exception I am aware of.

Someone in my office likens the situation at Digital with
Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Baily circus. The THEME and
ACTS change from year to year. The CLOWNS stay the same.
    They just change costumes.

Don't you guys see it. It is jobs for the boys. Note carefully that
most of the new talent Palmer bought in to run the CBUs has now
resigned. It appears the "broderbond" couldn't absorb it. I admire
Palmer for bringing in new blood when he formed the original CBUs. The
problem is there is an ENORMOUS layer of middle and upper management
that is very resistant to change and will always find jobs for each
    other.

I've seen this first hand. I'm currently running for the DCU Board of
Directors on a platform that involves a level of change. It is a sight
to behold to see the "broderbond" ie the holders of power doing all
they can to put pressure on those of us that don't subsribe to the
brotherhood. It even crosses corporate entities.

re .6 Corporate Industry Marketing Team
Are these the folks responsible for the 120 new req's
    	   in vtx? IE:

3 DATE 940330 36AE MARKETING CONSULTANT at RCH
4 DATE 940330 36AF MARKETING EXECUTIVE at RCH

Do some of the products really this much marketing?
Are all the "worker bees" titled consultant & executive?
Will all the industries be targeted from the Rocky Hill Ct.
           office?
Is this just the hiring site?
           Will there be more req's?
How big is the marketing force now?

                                                 Yikes!

Can't you folks see: Our Sr. Marketing team IS good at
    marketing...THEMSELVES!

I recently had a brief discussion with someone in 'other than alpha'
marketing, and his commments gave me heart-burn "I USED to have
an attractive carreer path in marketing, but now it's dead-ended"
"There's so much turmoil and politics in this group I'm ready to quit
( if I didn't need the health coverage)"

If this is typical of today's Digital Marketeers(I certainly hope it isn't)
    we're in BIG trouble folks!

The more we change the more things look the same !!!!

One difference between the old and the new industry marketing
organization I heard of is that the new one has fewer people
in it.

A lot fewer people.
