2787.0. "GOODBYE FRIEND!" by WMOIS::STYVES_A () Fri Nov 19 1993 15:16

Last Friday (11/12) I had the good fortune to attend a party
in Leominster. The reason for the party was to say a sad
farewell to the Westminster Facility. For the first time in
a long long time I saw pride on the faces of my co-workers.
The pride, unfortunately, was not in being a "DECCIE" but in
having worked in Westminster. It is our belief that no other
facality had the sense of pride and togetherness that we had
in Westminster. Every Christmas the employees held a gala
dinner for many of the elderly in the area. Volunteers from
all levels gladly donned their bright green elf outfits and
went from table to table serving our guests. At United Way
time we held the FOLLIES of 19xx. With almost 1200 people
in the plant we had an abundance of singers, comics, dancers
musicians etc. etc. We sold tickets and the money went to help
the less fortunate among us. It will sound "corny" and not
in the vocabulary of anyone with a PHD in business but we were
"FAMILY." Now, for whatever reason, we have been scattered to
the four corners of the Digital globe. We will continue, I'm
sure, to get involved with the various activities in our new
sites but we will never feel that sense of family we felt in
    WESTMINSTER.

GOODBYE GOOD FRIEND, YOU SERVED US WELL!!!

Having successfully run the interview gauntlet in October '75, I was
hired, and my first assignment in DEC was in Westmonster - Tech OEM
PDP8 Sales Service - the place looks a bit better now than it did
then. The biggest thing I had to worry about at that time, was
getting from my desk to a tech-editor's without getting run over
by a fork-truck!

I've had a few occassions to visit WMO over the past 18 years, and
I must admit, the memories were many and pleasant. Soon it will be
just another building, that has lots of 'history' for a lot of folks.

I had the priviledge of splitting the mfg database out of the
MAYNARD system and into WFO and WMO back in the early 70's.
Those were the days my friends...

was that into the MUMPS-11 system that ran the WMO inventory?
I had the ?priviledge? of trying to get that running once when an old
    system manager left suddenly.

Ah but its good to remember the old days.

I was hired to work in the Salem plant before it was completed. For
six months in 1977 we were bused from Salem to WMO daily, and paid 2
    hours overtime for it.

5 buses full of mostly early 20's folks from all points. A melting
pot in action. Marriages, divorces, culture clashes and friendships
flowed. One guy alledgedly called for a Digital helicopter because
there were no seats on the bus. He was flown to WMO and fired...

The first buses were school buses, which often broke down from the
highway duty. Later, diesel coaches were used. Regardless, the
prevalent radio hit was "Blinded by the Light" (Manfred Mann). Seems I
heard this tune at least twice a day; it's forever linked to the WMO
    era.

I drove past WMO last week enroute to visit a friend who worked
there until '92 when he resigned. I marveled at the size of the place,
the associated nostalgia and wondered about the new owner's interest
based upon the 50 Hz. power that used(?) to be there and the rumored
    "special" power grid feeds.

WMO was fun. WMO was my first job at Digital. Seeing an ownership
change is a realization similar to seeing one's childhood neighborhood
razed. Things change. Memories, friends and bonds endure.

It sort of pains one to hear that your starting site was just
sold. Many memories also. I started in March of '77 in LDP.

As I recall, that 50hz power came from Niagra Falls, long trip.

This note reminds me of how SALEM (NIO) plant used to be. I started
in '87 and caught the tail end of 'all the fun and friends'. Barely
a year and a half later - I went through my first round of TFSO.
The building didn't close but a new organization took over and that
was when I realized things weren't looking good.
