2768.0. "Great news for Digital" by POCUS::HUSTON () Tue Nov 09 1993 18:08

From 11/9 Wall Street Journal, extract w/o perm.

IBM is planning today to name William R. Johnson Jr., general manager
of Networking Hardware, a new division, according to people familiar
         with the plan.

Mr. Johnson, a former Digital Equipment Corp. vice president,
corporate marketing, will report to Ellen Hancock...

Analysts estimate the total business, one of the fastest-growing
sectors at IBM, generates about $5 billion of revenue annually.

    ---

That should be about $3 billion by next year.

    left Digital.

While there seems to be concensus about BJ's talent as VP of Marketing in
2602.*, there seems also to be concensus that he was a real asset
in HW and SW engineering.

Based on 0.'s information on BJ's new position at IBM I would be
very careful in calling this ' Great news for DIGITAL'.

Better we get our network products going out the door quickly,
before we see first results from them....

	Re. .0

What is this? IBM and Digital trading VP's? In that case they can
use a some more of ours now + a few draft picks for the next year :-).

Nothing personal... I rather liked BJ as a person.

But I also worked in engineering when he ran things. Good news for
    Digital.

(Can you spell "Hastings"? "Phase V"? "OSI Backbone"? "TCP/IP
support"? "WANrouter 500"? "StrataCom"? All point to failures on his
watch. None his own personal line management, but all by his selected
    managers whom he didn't discipline.)
