Subj:	(I) Steve & Allison Waskewicz Injured in Kansas Shooting

You may have heard news coverage this weekend regarding a shooting
incident in Topeka, Kansas. What you may not have realized is
that the family impacted is that of Steve Waskewicz, a disk
specialist here in the Center in the IISG district.

Steve, his wife Kathy, and three of their children left on
vacation on Saturday. While they were sleeping in their motel
room, a stray bullet went through the window, first wounding Steve
in the hand and then hitting their 11-year old daughter, Allison,
in the eye. The bullet lodged in the back of her skull and had to
be removed in surgery Sunday morning. Allison is now in stable
condition, but she will have additional surgery before being moved
back to Colorado Springs hopefully later this week.

For more information about the family and how you might help them,
please contact Tony Abdella, 592-4069, Dick Stuart, 592-4859, or
         Beth Diaz, 592-5313.

         Thank you --

If someone enters a note about a shooting, I can understand not wanting
politics tio enter the converstaion, but it's a bit difficult not
	talking about guns.

As Steven's sister, I can't convey enough heartfelt thanks for your
    thoughts and prayers.

For those of you who know Steve & Cath (and those who don't) they're
the kind of folks who'll take this tragedy and turn it into something
positive through their strength in faith & love, etc. etc.

Again, thanks for your thoughts and pls keep Ali and the family in
your prayers. We're thinking there's no greater power!

It is not difficult at all. This note is about the unfortunate
family that has been hurt and what might be done to support them.
Debating about guns will not contribute a bit to that.

    	Alfred,

I repeat, I do not see that guns have anything to do with any
	political agenda.

Be honest if it's yours, but don't tell me it's mine when it isn't.

Hello all,

As of last night when I talked with Steve things looked much better, Allison
was moved from ICU into Ped ward which is a promising sign. We have set up
a local trust/savings account and have received a lot of help and interest
from both the DEC community and the C.Springs community. We have 2 CSC/IISG
engineers that are pilots and a 6 seater plane lined up and 2 drivers to
bring the family car back. This morning I also got an offer from a local
person of a Cessna 310 and his time to fly them back and the possibility
that a local church will pick up the fuel. I'll update as things develop.

this is a sad thing to read when a young girl has to suffer because of
gang warfare. There's allways the chance those responsible will be
caught. But there's less chance they'll be punished.

Hello All,

just talked with Steve, he said they will not be releasing Allison before
next Tuesday. At present we have the plane and the local realtor group may
be picking up the fuel costs. A1 paramedics has donated the ground transport
from Meadow Lake airport to the Waskewicz home.

Again many thanks to all that are helping,

    Hello all,

I was steve's co-worker his last three years in the field, in Panama
City, Fl. My wife and I knew all his family. We are very saddened
by the situation, and pray for the speedy recovery of Allison, and
Steve. He has a wonderful family, and much support, which I know
can only help. Again, our prayers are with the Waskewicz family.

    Steve,

It saddened me to hear of the situation your family encountered. I hope
and pray that in time all the pain will heal. Kids have a remarkable
presence about themselves and their healing process. I can only hope
that you and the rest of your family will heal and go on with a better
life ahead. It hurts all of us when something like this happens. Our
    prayers are with you all.

    Steve,

As many others in this thread have already noted, it saddens us all
when an innocent, such as your daughter and yourself, are hurt in this
fashion. I have had the privilege of working with you in (on the phone) and
only know of you this way. I wish a speedy recovery for your daughter
and know that with the friends you have (locally and remotely), that
the caring and concern of many people are with her and you.

Best of luck, and God Bless you all.

Hello All,

take it easy across Kansas staying at major cities enroute.

Thanks to all for the help,

Hello,

Stopped by Steve's place last night. They made it home OK. Allison seems
in good spirits and appears to be taking things well.

We received a call from a local establishment (Dublin House) that wants to
put on a benefit comedy night. We will be grinding the details out next week
some time.

More news later as it happens.........

Dear Friends, July 20,1993

I'm a little late in posting this update on our family situation, but
I wanted to wait until I had more solid info as to how Allison is progressing.
For those of you who may be getting this and wondering "what is he talking
about?" I'll make a long story short.
On July 3rd, my family and I were enroute from Colorado to a family
reunion in Kentucky, when we stopped the first night in Topeka, Kansas.
During the evening, a gangfight between two opposing gangs, made its way to near
the hotel where we were sleeping. At about 1:30 AM, a stray bullet made its
way through our hotel window and struck my daughter Allison through the right
eye while she was asleep. At the hospital, neurosurgery removed a bullet from
the rear of her brain. She is now recovering well from the surgery with no
apparent loss of motor skills or brain damage, but due to extensive internal damag ,
will lose sight in the right eye. Reconstructive surgery has enabled her to be
able to recieve a prosthetic eye in about six to eight weeks.
Our HMO will not pay for prosthetics, but not to worry. Through the
kindness and generosity of the DIGITAL family, a fund was set up and we've
recieved about $4500 dollars to-date. We don't know what our expenses will be
as yet, but preliminary expectations from local doctors are suggesting
about $20,000.
From the bottom of our hearts, my family and I cannot begin to thank
all of you enough for all the cards, letters, flowers and donations of time
energy, and money given to us in our time of tragedy. Your support and
generosity are visible signs in showing Allison what a great organization we
are a part of.
I know many of you have sacrificed from your own families in many ways,
and I am truly humbled and grateful.
Many of you from across the US and around the world I've never met,
but hearing my wife say to me "... this is from a DIGITAL person" has made
you a part of our larger family.
The visible acts of love, concern and generosity have caused Cathy and I to
cry many tears of joy and pain as we come to grips with what this has all
meant to our family. We hold you all in our prayers of thanks.

                          Steve and Cathy

At the risk of starting a tangent, I simply cannot believe that an HMO
offered to a Digital employee would not cover a prosthetic eye.

Good luck, Steve.

To say the least, neither could I!
