2272.0. "Life After DEC (L.A.D.)" by TOOK::DMCLURE (Your Favorite Martian) Fri Dec 11 1992 16:17

I too was RIF'ed on Monday, and I have spent the remainder of the
week riding the emotional roller coaster of pulling myself up, only to
allow myself to be dragged back down, etc., etc., ad nauseum. During
this time, I have avoided saying goodbye in here for two reasons:

    1.	After having spent the past nine years at DEC, I was in denial.

    2.	I thought I might land another job at DEC by the end of today.

As such, I thought I'd wait and see what happened first before
entering a note in here. Given that we are now approaching the 11th
hour of this RIF, I think it is fairly safe to say that those of us
who haven't yet found other jobs within DEC by now probably aren't
going to (short of a miracle anyway). As such, I will now sign out too...

Rather than say "goodbye" however, I would like to take this
opportunity to try starting something new: that being an organization
of former (as well as present) DEC employees who are interested in
maintaining some sort of professional association with one another.
I think an approriate name for this organization would be "L.A.D."
    (Life After DEC).

The goals of this organization have yet to materialize exactly,
but the primary purpose would be to provide DECies with a means of
manitaining the DEC culture which has evolved here over the years.
Just think of the possibilities; we are possibly one of the most
interconnected groups of people in history. Why not try and extend
this interconnectivity beyond the mere term of employment with this
company, and make it a semi-permanent association?

If anyone has any interest in becoming a member of such an
organization, or (better yet) if anyone has any experience in forming
or maintaining such an organization, please feel free to reply to this
note, or send me mail at this account (until 5 o'clock anyway), or call
me at my new business phone # (508) 842-7686 after today.

In closing, it's been real, fun, *and* real fun. I wish you the
best of luck to all of you (those of you who are still here, as well
as those of you who, like myself, are leaving). Later,

It strikes me that the medium which has allowed this global culture
to form and grow is electronic communications. Specifically Notes.
Now, we can't expect to all have access to the same VMS-based notes conference,
so how about the next best thing?

How about a newsgroup?

org.ex.deccies
or
org.former.fingers
or
alt.culture.dec

Anyone interested?
Anyone know what's involved in setting up a newsgroup?

Just about anyone can create a group in the alt hierarchy.

Then people just need access to a usenet feed.
