2069.0. "Cheery news from a "Partner"" by DENVER::DAVISGB (Another hot number from the 50's) Tue Aug 25 1992 16:54

Whew...some companies have rather strange approaches to getting us to
    sell their product...

I just received an envelope from ACC Systems (Mona product). It was
sent to my PO box number, with my mailstop (AQO) after my name.

Printed on the front of the envelope in the bottom left corner is:

    *****************************************
    	Nothing inside about:

    	    (A Digital logo)

    	o Rightsizing or Management Shuffles

    	o ULTRIX/MIPS Phaseouts
    	o ALPHA-RISC Delays

    	Only the latest product info
    	on ACC SYSTEMS'S DEC based
    	communication products
    ******************************************

The letter inside has a quote: "ACC only wins when DEC wins. We work
with DEC. We build complimentary products."

At the bottom it says "...pass this information along to someone who
may be interested in helping DEC stay in the game!"

 >We build complimentary products.

	Is this

	(a) a product which says nice things about you?
(for example, a compiler linked to a voice
		 synthesiser: "hey, nice programming, dave")

	(b) a product which they don't charge you for?

2069.2ref .1, my attempt an outlining the meaningsSTAR::ABBASII spell checkTue Aug 25 1992 19:0411
I think it means a product that compliment in a cohesive and harmonious
and in concert and in tunes and in accords with the other products you
may already have installed in your existing operating and working
environment whether it may be business or non-business related
    activities.

but I love you idea of a talking compiler, we have such a product
by any fluke of a chance?

    thank you,
    /Nasser

I just thought it was a novel approach to getting an employee's
attention....like we get all kinds of mail talking about downsizing,
and product delays...here's something CHEERY for a change!

re .2

You need to check usage as well as spelling, Nasser!
There ain't no such meaning for "compliment".
2069.5a comment on early comment made commenting on the wrong wordSTAR::ABBASII spell checkTue Aug 25 1992 22:5318
there is no such meaning to that word !?

now you tell me, Dave, after all the self struggle I had to accept
and go through as I endured the deep thought to come up of those highly
    selected words before publishing .2

this is too hard, one has to in addition to spell checking, also know
    what words actually do mean!!

I am seriously starting to think of leaving the business of commentating
to something less drastically and dramatically challenging.

    thank you,
    /Nasser
    I spell checked

Nasser, Porter (.4) was right, you need to do more than spell check.
After all Bush's 'know gnu taxis' gets through just fine but has little
meaning. But I love your enthusiasm (and creative usage) - don't quit
noting because of some sniveling nit pickers.

2069.10MU::PORTERwas it something that you said?Wed Aug 26 1992 18:153
Even DECgrammar wouldn't be enough - both "complementary software"
and "complimentary software" would pass muster. What we
need is DECsemantics!
2069.11we could use a local chapter of Nitpickers AnonymousCUPTAY::BAILEYSeason of the WinchWed Aug 26 1992 19:088
What we need is to worry less about spelling and grammar, and more
about the content of the message.

It is true that when one has nothing significant to say, one can always
    focus on the insignificant.

Nasser is one example of what it's like to have 'artificial' removed
    from 'artificial intelligence.'

Automated tools don't help with his replies - you need to think!

Often times, the pain this process (thinking) causes to some, manifests
    itself as 'nit' replies.

2069.14in these times, we should all calm down and reflectSTAR::ABBASISpell check, its good for youThu Aug 27 1992 04:2418
Please , please folks, calm down, we should not fight with each other like
this, we should love each others and hold in high esteem other peoples
feelings and noting emotions, remember we are in this all together, we
must hold hands, embrace and look to the bright future in high spirit and
the powers of inspirations that is hidden dormant deep within all of us as
we marsh against the obstacles no matter what they may be with the
strong believe than we will concur and override them in feverish
insight and raised enthusiasm that will show every one the true meaning
of the power of unity and emotional ties that hold us all together.
remember, if you believe that you can do it, then you will !

    thank you,

Bob, I was agreeing with you....not picking on you....

    >about the content of the message.

    >It is true that when one has nothing significant to say, one can always
    >focus on the insignificant.

And I said "Really!" as in right on...how true....my thoughts
    exactly....

Back to the original subject....I was mad about this cooperative
marketing (choose your noun...partner... whatever) trying to get sales to
push their product by saying " Hey! There's only cheery news in this
envelope, and nothing about how screwed up your company is!"

I mean we are having trouble, but we don't need our friends to remind
    us of it, after all....

And then everyone went off on another spell checker rathole and clogged
    up this note.

Hmmm... I just reread the basetopic and the replies. I must
disagree with your conclusion. In content, style, or
inference (or all of these, in some cases) each reply is
seems be quite in keeping with the topic, IMHO.

Perhaps it is the lack of the phrase "...cooperative
marketing..." in the replies that fails to call attention
to the thread of discussion. Perhaps.

Then again, maybe I'll have to quit telling the waitress,
"I'll have what he's having" when I'm in a resturant,
    sitting near /Nasser.
