1767.0. "Looking for software" by CSCOA1::BEKELE_D (My Opinions are MINE, MINE, all MINE!) Thu Feb 13 1992 16:28

Hello,

I am not sure if this is the place to post this note but I would
appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction.

I work in an HPO team. Inorder to facilitate better communication
between team members we are looking for a software that gives current
status of each person in the team. ie. Each person runs said application
from a window and updates the data base as needed (ex. "out to lunch",
"lab", "meeting", ect). Since the tool periodically updates each user's
window, everyone will have an up-to-date idea of where everybody/anybody
is.

has anyone developed such a tool or something similar to it that can
be modified to fit the bill?

Thank you inadvance for any input!

All-In-One has that kind of functionality. I doubt if you want to use it
just for that, however. Maybe someone in the A1 community can help you
carve out something that will do what you want.

    Sun "bundles" a group calendaring package with their windows. There's a

    It'd be easy to build such a thing on top of the file system:

    In the group login:

    $ define foo$group <some group directory>
    $ Im :== @foo$group:Im_doing
    $ What :== dir foo$group:*

    Im_doing.com:

    $ delete <user-name>.*;*		! F$USER minus brackets?
    $ create <user-name>.is_'p1
    <dummy line>
    $

    Some refinements might be required, but you'd be able to write

    $ Im working
    $ Im out-fishing
    $ Im fixing_bugs

    and would get a response when you asked:

    $ what

    Directory .....

    smith.is_working
    jones.is_out-fishing
    aho.is_fixing_bugs

I have writen a Utility called Live. It is designed for use within the CSC,
to see who is in and who is handeling live calls. It includes may features
that you would not find useful, but features you may be intrested in are:

	Display of who is in the office. (Pictorial display of the office).

	List of how many are in each group.

	A messaging system to sent messages to inderviduals/groups/all

	Phone list facility.

	Availability system for booking Holidays courses etc, which
	is intergrated into the office display, so you can see were
	some one is.

It is all motif based, and I've just about got all the bugs out
of the latest version.

If you are intrested or want more information mail me on

1767.8Connections for teamsCALS::THACKERAYFri Feb 14 1992 17:017
    One of the best I've seen (I'm a user) is Connections, from Concentrix
    Technology, Inc., designed by Danny Goodman (for those who know about
    HyperCard).

    It only runs on Macintosh, though.

    This all sounds like a precursor to an Orwellian 1984 "Big Brother"
    nightmare.

    We have a whiteboard that people are supposed to update when they leave
    the area. No one uses it unless they call in sick at which point the
    secretary then marks them as being out as sick. If you forget to
    erase that declaration when you finally do return, you'll be eternally
    "sick". So much for the whiteboard.

    Personally, I like the recommendation of ".5". It's simple, free, and
    does just what you want... if all you want is to know where someone is
    or rather "was" last. If you want to compare the average amount of time
    employee 'A' spends in the bathroom to that of employee 'B'.... well...

1767.10SPR HELP!!!!ODIXIE::MILLERPAFri Feb 21 1992 17:227
    I am at a dead end and need someone's input if possible. Does anyone
    know a contact name and number for the SPR Center in Alpharetta. I
    have an unhappy customer and I can't seem to find this out. Sometime
    it feels as though you have to be a private detective to find anything
    out.

    Thanks....

    Depending on what you are trying to do with SPRs. If you are trying
    to initiate one, the Customer Support Centers are supposed to treat
    SPR's like any other call. So you can call the team which would
    normally deal with the subject on which you want to submit an SPR.

    We have DECcies call us up here to see if we can track down an
    existing SPR. I don't know if ALPH does that or not.
1767.12Checking SPR statusXLII::NSOHLMon Feb 24 1992 19:3825
    I've been in touch with .10, but incase anyone else interested.....

    Paper SPRs are mailed either to a post office box in MA or to a post
    office box in Alpharetta (the ones in MA are forwarded to ALF).
    They are manually entered into the Call Handling system (CHAMP) and are
    routed to the group that supports the product referenced in the SPR.
    The support group treats the SPR like any other problem - if there is a
    workaround available, they contact the customer with the information;
    if there is no workaround, the information is sent to engineering.
    The support center will screen every SPR before it's sent to
    engineering regardless of how it originated.

    If there is a sequence number associated with the SPR, you can call the
    support center that supports the product in question and someone in the
    support group can track down the status for you.

    If you have a paper SPR number or if you don't have a sequence number,
    you can call 1-800-332-8000 (support center in ALF). Tell the CRR
    answering the phone that you want to check the status of an SPR and
    they will put a request in the ISG queue and you will be called
    back.

    Hope this helps.

I wrote a tool that performs the function you require.
It was specifically developed to replace the white
board, and in fact is called An Electronic In/Out Utility -
or AEIOU - some call it vowels.

Written in VAX Pascal, it uses SMG and relative file
organization so it's mighty portable. Send me mail
if you'd like a copy. I've been planning to put it out
on the toolshed and there didn't seem to be any call.

	Sorry you think it's Orwellian. It seems to me to be more a positive
response to the question of "How can I make myself available to the
department/team/customer?", rather than the micro-management of "how many
seconds did you spend in the bathroom.".

Since everyone isn't on pager, and sometimes are required to be in meetings
etc... it seems pretty pro-active to be available - e.g. does the secretary
know where you are?

The most Orwellian "Big Brother" nightmare that I've seen recently is the
H-P interactive "wall tv". That was present in blaring, loud-speaker form
in _1984_ and represented a mis-use of the technology. It remains to be seen
if the HP announcement represents an appropriate use.

     I don't know if it is what you're looking for, but there is one called
"TYPIT" in VTX TOOLSHED. It's not fancy, but it is functional (or used to be).
