Hmmm - this says "broad strategy", nothing about a merger.

Could be nothing more than the alliance we had some time ago with
that small computer manufacturer - Apple. (Y'know, the one that produced
hardly anything).

Maybe we are climbing into bed with them with Windows NT?

Boston TV station Ch. 5 (WCVB) reported this in their 6:00 p.m. news
    segment last night (Monday, 11/11/91).

They made a point to mention that Microsoft chose to do business with
Digital because IBM now has an agreement with Apple. No other details
    were given.

I don't think it is a "merge" of the two companies, merely a
business partnership. It's the new way of doing business.

This is all starting to remind me of junior high school romances.
Have you heard? Ever since Apple broke up with DEC and started going
steady with IBM, now it looks like DEC and Microsoft may be going steady...

Almost anything is possible. However, by law a company must reveal
ownership information in an other company when that ownership reaches
    some amount. 5 or 10% I believe.

at 1000 shares per employee it would just about cover all that are not
currently owned. But all we would have to do is own the majority and
vote them to control the company.

There's about 120mil shares outstanding. And employees own a little over
    10% now.

re .20-.22

It all fits. We are our own best customer - Digital buys more of its
equipment than any one else. Our employees comprise the biggest
collection of Digital users in the world. Why shouldn't we also run this
   company?

It's an open market. Buy all you want, and/or lobby your co-workers
to do the same.

Do you want the effort to be organized? Form a holding company and sell
stock in it. Then use the money raised to buy DEC stock.

The alternative, as the previous reply indicated, is that large numbers
of employees will SELL their stock in the face of a favorable take-over bid.
Personal profit wins.

1669.26Shareholders are the ownersSDSVAX::SWEENEYHoney, I iconified the kidsWed Nov 27 1991 10:1715
There are a number of ways in which a Japanese industrial conglomerate
could have influence over Digital indistinguishable from owning
    Digital without "owning" Digital.

The way other companies in which the CEO thought were "unbuyable" by
the Japanese were bought were by dividing the company into two or more
companies, only one of which had a government/military supplier role.

The other company or companies were then available to the highest
bidder, in many cases, the highest bidders were Japanese.

And of course, why should the shareholders of Digital be restricted as
to whom they can sell their shares to? If the United States government
wants to stop me from selling my shares to a Japanese corporation, they
    can buy the shares themselves.
