917.0. "AIDS support groups" by BARTLE::ROSS (Name too personal to share) Wed Sep 13 1989 22:21

    We need your help. There have been several random requests to
    establish Digital Support Groups around HIV issues. For example:

    	- Parents who have lost a child to AIDS
    	- Employees living with HIV infection
    	- Partners of employees living with HIV infection
    	- Partners who have lost someone to AIDS
    	- Managers who are dealing with employees living with
    	  HIV infection

    I need to hear from you:

    What do you think of the idea? Is this a worthwhile effort that
    would be supported by participation?

    Please contact me at DTN 251-1418 (SOCIAL::ROSS) or my secretary
    Donna at DTN 251-1419 (SOCIAL::WELLSD).

    Just so someone doesn't flame me about this, I am really asking a
    valid (to me) question that I've thought about before but never asked.
    Why does the support group have to be just about AIDS , why can't it be
    included in any other group that deals with similar (death because of
    cancer, etc) subject matter. I would think that most of the support
    needed would be for the death and not the particular disease.

917.2Different diseases, different concernsINTER::JONGSteve Jong/NaC PubsWed Sep 20 1989 21:496
    Support groups tend to coalesce around specific illnesses because the
    illnesses take different courses, and the concerns of those desiring
    support are different. The course of cystic fibrosis is nothing like
    that of leukemia.

    And nothing is like dying of AIDS.

    I believe that the reason for AIDS support groups recognizes that this
    particular disease carries a lot of excess baggage with it that, say,
    cancer does not...I've experienced both in my family, and coping with
    AIDS is a whole new ballgame.

917.5Update?PICKET::CASEYWed Feb 14 1990 11:358
    Does anyone have an update on the AIDS support groups?

    And I'd like to add one more category of members:

      - People who've host a non-partner, non-child, just plain darned
        good friend.
