-< This is how it works to become a manager in Software Services >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

> To be a manager in Software Services, we have to go through the
> MDC, a review board comprised of an Area SWS Manager, two second
> level managers (usually DMs), and a personnel manager type. We
> have to bone up on many facets of Digital's policies and then get
> quizzed on it. This is whether new hire or otherwise.

I BET MY BOTTOM DOLLAR, THAT MOST OF THE MANAGERS WILL FAIL THE
TEST !! I ALSO DO NOT BELIVE THIS IS TRUE FOR NEW HIRE MANAGER..
HOW CAN WE EXPECT SOME GUY FROM OUT SIDE AN ORGANIZATION, WHO IS
JUST BEING INTERVIEWED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ORANGE BOOK....

> So, I can say for SWS that we do have a policy that managers cannot manage
> without the required knowledge-base.

THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG FOR NEW HIRES ! I HAVE SEEN LOT OF NEW HIRE
MANAGERS IN A PARTICULAR AREA, WHO WERE HIRED WITHOUT GOING THROUGH
    MDC.

> And, we go to the MDC only after a fully charted nine-stage obstacle
> course of interviews and/or classes.

AGAIN THIS IS NOT TRUE FOR NEW HIRES..

TYPICALLY IN THE SWS, IT IS A BIG NET WORK.. IF YOU ARE PART OF THE
NETWORK OF VPs and DMs THEN YOU ARE IN AS A MANAGER.

It might be interesting to submit a qualified resume (lets say yours)
with a false name and your home phone and see if you get any calls
to come in for an interview....:-)

717.2We are getting to a professional management training program...YUPPIE::COLEThe TOUGH survive the bleeding edge!Tue Feb 07 1989 16:336
Topic 720 is also taking up this subject, and 720.1 gives a brief
overview of the Management Development Program now used by most all Field
organizations to put employees on the management "short-list".

In SWS, there is no longer an MDC. You still have to interview the
next couple of managers up the chain, however, to get a management job!

With regard to 717.2, the MDC is alive and well in ECA.
717.4I was little premature in .2 ...YUPPIE::COLEIf this is a dream, please feel free to wake me!Sat Oct 14 1989 14:234
... since I wasn't aware that the Southern Area is the only one
testing the "new" Management Certification Program under Country aupices.

	Sorry about that!
