446.0. "The "NEW MDC PROGRAM". Info please!!" by SWAPS::CZARNECKI (Reality is a latent image) Thu Jan 21 1988 17:56

Could someone explain Digitals new policy regarding Field Service
Employees who are not presently in management being barred from
    getting into management?

We are being told that Field Service people, regardless of their
experience, cannot become Field Service Managers unless they first
have a position managing 10 or more people for at least 2 years.
This seems like a catch-22 situation.

Is this the new way at Digital? Is this a local program?
Is this the way Digital values the many years of hard work that
    its employees have contributed?

As a spinoff of this program, we are seeing new managers being
hired exclusively from outside the company. I am sure there must
be at least a handful of qualified internal candidates who are being
    passed by for these positions.

    Anybody else seeing this happen?

Whatever you might hear is meaningless until you get it in
writing. Ask for a written policy statement. I could concieve
of a program requiring field people to work in Eng. or Mfg. for
their first managment assignment, but if it exists it should
    be written.......................................MWR

Its possible, with the reclassification, that Field Service Manager
is not an entry level management position. I hear you have to preform
as a lower level manager (maybe something like managing Customer
    Response Reps or logistics supervisor).
