2055.0. "system-f-devinact error causing alarm exception" by COL01::LUNT () Thu Jan 09 1992 12:16

Hello,

In the past couple of weeks I have been recieving several MCC alarm
exceptions like the one below.

From:	BYLV21::MCC$ALARMS   "BYL/B151 Card 2 Port 1 t"  7-JAN-1992 20:13:24.48
To: @MCC_COMMON:ALARMS_DISTRIBUTION_LISTE.DIS
CC:
Subj:	MCC EXCEPTION "TLB004_DCD_ERROR_LINE6 7-JAN-1992 20:12:33.48"

Rule name: MCC 0 ALARMS RULE TLB004_DCD_ERROR_LINE6
    Domain: Domain DECNOS_NS:.EU.BY.BYL.B151
  Occurred at: 7-JAN-1992 20:12:33.48
     Category: DCD ERROR
  Description: BYL/B151 Card 2 Port 1 to .EU.BY.BYL.TLB001/BYL TESTBRIDGE B151
     Severity: critical

   Expression: (CHANGE_OF (TRANSLAN DECNOS_NS:.EU.BY.BYL.TLB004 LINE 6 DCD ERRORS, *,*), at every=00:15:00)
Exception: The requested operation cannot be completed
%MCC-E-TRANSMITERROR, error trying to transmit a packet
                   %SYSTEM-F-DEVINACT, device inactive

The system messages book for VMSfor the message "devinact" says the
following:

"The device unit involved in the current operation is inactive. This message
indicates that you tried to perform an activity that cannot be properly
performed until the device unit is active. For example, the XE devices has not
been started"

The user action is the following:
"Start the controller before doing any tributary requests. The user should
make sure that the QIO STARTUP has finished successfully or that the XE device
has not shut down the unit due to a hardware failure"

I have been monitoring my line counters but do
not seem to see any send errors, or any types of errors execpt "user
buffer unavailable." I would assume, since mail and LTM and other
programs are not returning any error messages that this is possibly
an MCC QIO programming error. We do not do any module development here, we
are only end users of MCC. I'm not sure where to begin to look for what
might be wrong. If someone could please tell me where I should look, system
paramter, ncp, mcc, in order to provide more light on the problem, that would
be great.

Thanks in advance,

P.S. I am still running V1.1 as I am still waiting for our V1.2 field test kit.

Hallo Julie Ann !!

The error message you receive (%MCC-E_TRANSMITERROR, error trying to transmit a
packet %SYSTEM-F-DEVINACT, device inavtive) is a known major bug in DECmcc.

You can read about it in note 1551.*

By the way does anybody know if this will be fixed in V.1.2 ????

Regards Patrik Lindered.

In talking (typing, actually) to Chris, sounds like the BRIDGE AM has fixed
this for 1.2. The AM *still* gets the CVR, but will do retries instead fo
just giving up... I have put this is on my list of Vitalink's Translan AM
upgrade "to-dos", so I expect this to be fixed in their next release.
