| Rather than have you read through the other conference (and not get
your questions answered) let me try and summarise here.
The three documents are only *part* of the set of documents around
OSI Management.
10040 - OSI System Management Overview (SMO)
10165 - OSI Structure of Management Information (SMI)
-1 Management Information Model (MIM)
-4 Guidelines for the Definition of Managed Objects (GDMO)
SMO, as some describe, is fairly content-free. It does, however,
describe an EMA-like view of management (with management systems - aka
directors - and agent systems - aka managed systems). There is no
concept of conformance to SMO; it's more like a philosophy statement.
10165 is conceptually the same as the EMA Entity Model (where MIM is
the modeling part, and GDMO corresponds to, but is distinct from, MSL).
In fact, the EMA Entity Model formed the basis for 10165 - we submitted
our work as the starting point. Of course, like any standards body, the
end result is different to the starting point. Thus, to be precise,
neither MSU nor DECmcc support 10165-1 and 10165-4 directly or exactly,
although there is work being done (for example, implementation of the
Network Management Forum agreements) to implement DECmcc AMs and Agent
PMs to support OSI management.
Some time in the future, Digital management products will become closer
aligned with OSI management as it ended up in the standards.
