218.0. "Synonym required?" by MARVIN::COBB (Graham R. Cobb (Wide Area Comms.), REO2-G/H9, 830-3917) Tue Jul 31 1990 12:43

I tried entering a node on the iconic map.

MCC required a synonym. Why? My standalone Phase V router doesn't need or
want a synonym but I have to put something in that field to keep MCC happy.

What does MCC do with the synonym?

218.1Register NODE directive requires synonymBARREL::LEMMONTue Jul 31 1990 16:1314
When adding an entity to the map, the iconic map pm performs a REGISTER
directive on the entity. It goes out to the dictionary and retrieves any/all
Register request arguments. In the case of the Phase IV and Phase V nodes
there is a "required" argument for the synonym. The Iconic map will not
process the input until all requried fields are entered. This is also
true for the FCL interface.

There have been discussions with the DNA4 developers to make the synonym
argument optional. If one isn't entered they could generate it from the entity
name passed. I believe they are going to implement it this way.

	The SYNONYM argument is required so that the Phase V AM can use the
VMS $QIO interface to establish a connection to the target node's CML object.
When you register a new node the synonym must be a Phase IV Node Name that
is defined in the local Phase IV node database (NETNODE_REMOTE.DAT).

	If the Phase V AM receives a request that has a Fullname Node Instance,
it attempts to retreive a Synonym from DNS and establish a connect using
the synonym.

	You don't have to use a Fullname however, you can issue commands
to the Phase V AM using a Phase IV name as the Node Instance.

218.3synonyms should not be requiredCLAUDI::PETERSTue Jul 31 1990 20:2517
I think (shoot me if I wrong) synonyms are only required by VMS 'Wave I' nodes
because they are beefed up (pseudo OSI) Phase IV nodes who can use DNS but don't
have too (bad explanation ... need a DECnet-VAX type for a real one).
DECnet-Ultrix Phase V nodes don't need them and neither do routers.
DECmcc should not REQUIRE them. The transition tools with the DECnet Phase V
software assist with the set up of synonyms and it is far better that those
tools to the grunt work for this. Also, the DECnet Phase V software should
(Ultrix does/VMS may) come with installation or configuration command
procedures to set-up synonyms. I think is it unnecessary for DECmcc to
require them, given the tools. It should certainly display them as a
characteristic if they are set-up. Also, the main function of synonyms
is so that applications which accept Phase IV style names can continue
to operate on Phase V nodes without rewriting the application (and VMS
session control appears to be using them until they are fully Phase V).
