609.0. "What can TCP/IP AM manage?" by MAIL::CLAYTON (Merlin Clayton DTN 445-7217) Thu Jan 10 1991 13:08

Can anyone give me some indication as to what other devices can be managed by
the SNMP AM other than DEC Ultrix hosts, ultrix workstations, and TCP/IP host?

Are there MIB extensions written to manage other third party devices?

	The SNMP AM can 'manage' any system/device that implements MIB I.
	Here the term 'manage' means perform SNMP Get and Set requests.

> Are there MIB extensions written to manage other third party devices?

	There are many MIB extensions ( actually they are entirely new MIBs )
	designed by various vendors and implemented in their devices.
	The next release of the AM will incorporate knowledge of other MIBs.
	At this time I don't know which ones.

	The AM kit that was release in November along with DECmcc 1.1 EFT
	contains support for Wellfleet's private MIB.

     What type of effort is required by the Network manager to set up access
     to third party devices that support SNMP MIB I ?

     I'm writing a PSS work statement describing the tasks required during
     the installation and set-up of the TCP/IP AM and I need some help
     understanding how this all works.

     Some of the devices the customer wants to "see" are:

     	Synoptics 3030 and 3000 concentrators
     	Wellfleet bridge
     	ACC 4030 bridge
     	Vitalink Translan 3, 350, VX
     	Timeplex TDM Link-2

     If these devices truly implement MIB I, it should work. In all honesty,
     what do you think the chances are of this functioning ? Again, what type
     of effort may be involved ?

     Many thanks in advance.

	In all honesty I think the chances of this working are quite good.

	The amount of effort required by the network manager is minimal
	assuming that the TCP/IP AM has been installed.
609.4You need the IP addressNSSG::R_SPENCENets don't fail me now...Fri Feb 22 1991 16:445
    I think you only need the IP addresses of the things you want to manage
    and then you give em names and register them into DECmcc.
