291.0. "Difference of SNMP offering,VMS or ULTRIX" by OSAV20::IZUTANI (Kenji Izutani,Tech.Consul.,CSEC,DEC-Japan) Thu Aug 30 1990 00:49

Could anyone explain the difference in functionality between DECmcc
Management Station for ULTRIX and SNMP Access Module for DECmcc BMS/VMS?

Also I'd like to know is which product we should offer in what customer
situations.

291.1Today: MSU for IP Director for the restENUF::GASSMANThu Aug 30 1990 03:1010
    The US sales update (July 5 I think) had a section on how to choose
    between the DECmcc director and the DECmcc management station for
    ultrix. When looking at SNMP support, MIB extensions won't be in the
    Director until around the V1.1 timeframe. Neither will iconic maps.
    Real time graphs may come later than V1.1. However, features such as
    alarms and modular integration are not in the MSU product. If the
    customer is mostly a UNIX shop, with mostly TCP/IP, you should show the
    MSU product first. Plans are to replace that with a ULTRIX director.

291.4then how abt DNT V2.0?OSAV20::IZUTANIKenji Izutani,Tech.Consul.,CSEC,DEC-JapanThu Aug 30 1990 23:309
Re: .1

Thank you, Bill.

By the way, another question is that how about the DNT V2.0?
My understanding is that the MSU is DNT v2.0, and as far as I see the product
sepcification of DNT, there seems to be a MAP functionality in it.

291.5MSU training tape availableENUF::GASSMANFri Aug 31 1990 13:2455
    Yes, DECmcc MSU (aka MERLIN/DNT) has maps, autotopology, reports,
    distributed polling, realtime monitoring, path trace facility, and
    more, but concentrated on TCP/IP devices, not modems/muxs/etc.

    A training tape is available for learning about MSU, positioning, and
    the NETsupport service that it is also used for. Ordering information
    follows.

DESCRIPTION:

     This 30-minute video tape will focus on introducing the major features
of the management station. The goal of the video is to provide insight
into the functionality of this product in terms of providing a network
management solution in an ULTRIX TCP/IP environment, as well as give an
overview to the viewer from a product marketing and service product
marketing perspective.

     This tape is strongly suggested for sales and sales support personnel
selling network product or service solutions.
