4887.0. "DECmcc on an FDDI workstation ?" by LARVAE::AITKINS_T () Thu Apr 15 1993 11:36

    Hi,
    	I have herd a rummour that DECmcc will only work with an Ethernet
    connection to the network and will not work via an FDDI network
    connection, can someone please confirm that this is only a rummour.
    Unfortunatly my customer who is about to purchase DECmcc has herd this
    rummour to and is awaiting my reply.

    			thanks

4887.1DOES MCC ON AN FDDI WORKSTATION FUNCTION??MORO::MAUTZ_RINetworks >= to DECnetThu May 13 1993 23:3712
    At risk of someones ire for asking an already asked question
    (4887.0),:

    Will Polycenter Network Manager 200/400 run on an FDDI based
    VAX workstation? If so, are there any functionallity problems?
    If not, when if ever will it?

    I am asking this again as a separate note rather than a reply
    to 4887.0 because that was a month ago and nobody replied!

    As with 4887's writer, I also have a customer who wants to do
    this!

I have moved this reply here, since people see new replies in the same
way as new notes, and posting new notes clutters up the conference.

I believe that the reason there has been no answer is that nobody here has
tried to run on a purely FDDI station.

The only issue I know of off hand is that in order to generate UIDs,
Polycenter 200 relies on the uniqueness of an Ethernet address.
But I believe that FDDI has an equivalent MAC address, right?

    The short answer to this question is that FDDI controllers are
    not offically supported by the MCC EA routines, but there are some
    workarounds.

    See notes 4734, 4783, 5045 and 5049 for discussions on workarounds
    and problems associated with using MCC from and FDDI managment station.
