4387.0. "TSAM 1.0.0 & Xyplex/MAXserver/MX1400 ??" by ZTOIS1::VISTA (Renato VISTA, SIS Strasbourg, France) Thu Jan 14 1993 07:20

    Hi,

    I'm working on a VMS DECmcc/BMS V123 platform + TSAM V1.0.0

    There are some XYPLEX Terminal Server on my network and I've tried to
    manage them with TSAM. I've got the following messages :

    1) On XYPLEX, the configuration is :

    MAXserver V3.0 Rem 440500 HW 00.00.00 Lat Protocol V5.1
    Software : MX1400

    2) With DECmcc : (registred as TYPE = DS200)

    MCC>show terminal_server .server.xyplex02 all char

    Communication with the target has been interrupted

    2) With TSAM PASTHRU Utility :

    MCC-E-RSP_TIMEOUT, Server did not output response to command
    MCC-E-LOGIN_COMM_PROB, Communication protocol failure during login attempt
    MCC-I-LOGIN_STATE, MCC no prompt found after expecting Local> prompt

    Is it really possible to manage Xyplex Terminal Server ?

    Thank you for your help.
    Renato

4387.1Xyplex remote console promptTOOK::CASSIDYLinda, LKG2-2/BB10, DTN 226-7270Thu Jan 14 1993 12:1927
I noticed a strange thing with Xyplex terminal servers. For TSM or TSAM to
establish a remote console connection with a terminal server, the terminal
server has to use the "Local> " prompt on the remote console. Digital's
terminal servers do (except for the DS90's, but that's another story), and
I believe that most other competitors do as well. The prompt requirement is
an integral part of the console carrier state machine in TSM and TSAM, not
something that can be eliminated.

Xyplex uses the "Xyplex> " prompt. They must have noticed that TSM would not
work with this prompt years ago and added a workaround - if you log in to the
remote console with username TSM, you magically get the "Local> " prompt,
and TSM can communicate with it.

The problem now is that TSAM does not log in to the remote console with
username TSM. It uses something like "DECmcc TS AM" The Xyplex terminal
servers do not know that this is another case where the management tool needs
the Local> prompt - they respond with the Xyplex> prompt, and the console carrier
state machine can't recognize it.

I contacted Xyplex about a year ago when I was sort of working on TS AM to tell
them about this. No one seemed to have any idea what I was talking about. I
guess a (really strange) workaround that DEC could do is make TSAM log in as
TSM. That would satisfy the console carrier machine. But I don't know if
that's possible or the right thing to do (I'm not on the project anymore). The
problem really belongs to Xyplex, but I know that doesn't help you.

4387.2does it manage datability vcp1000&vcp200s?SUBWAY::AMMUThu Jan 14 1993 13:415
    How to manage datability terminal servers. They do offer passthru
    mechanism. What terminal type to use, they come with modular cards,
    on vcp 1000 32 ports, 64 ports, 96 ports 128 ports etc... I tried with
    snmp , that works, but its not user friendly when compared to tsam.

4387.3TSAM doesn't work with Xyplex. TSM Does.CUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentFri Jan 22 1993 04:437
    Do not expect TSAM to support Xyplex or any other non-DEC terminal
    server. You may get things to work for a short while, but not for
    long.

    TSM works great for Xyplex terminal servers. We use it all the time.

4387.4How to manage Xyplex (MAXserver 5000, 1500, 1600)HLRG02::SYSTEMOpel MantaFri May 28 1993 11:3612
Hello,

I have a customer who wants to buy DECmcc, but he wants to manage also his
Xyplex terminal servers (MAXserver 5000, 1500, 1600).
Is there any way to manage these terminal servers via DECmcc?
Is there anybody who can manage these using TSAM?
What software version is needed in the Xyplex servers to manage them using SNMP?

Any help is appreciated.

/-/	Henk.
4387.5TSAM won;t work with XyplexTOOK::CASSIDYLinda, LKG1-3/C14, DTN 226-7270Fri May 28 1993 13:532
See reply .1 of this note for an explanation of why TSAM cannot support
Xyplex servers.
